OpenAI makes AI video generator Sora publicly available
OpenAI’s ChatGPT Pro and Plus subscribers in select countries now have access to Sora, a video generator launched today. Sora Turbo, the initial version, creates 5-to-20-second video clips in various resolutions and aspect ratios, offering creative flexibility for users.
Key features include generating video variations from text or images, editing clips with a Re-mix tool, and combining videos via Blend. A Storyboard interface enables video sequences, while Loop and Re-cut options enhance customization. Video blogger Marcus Brownlee praised its versatility during early access.
Videos require credits, with costs depending on resolution and length. Plus plans provide 1,000 credits monthly, while Pro offers 10,000, supporting higher resolution and faster “priority videos.” Pro also includes unlimited “relaxed” videos without watermarks, unlike the default watermarked output for all users.

Meta's API changes disrupt third-party Instagram integrations
Meta's recent changes to its developer tools are disrupting third-party apps, including Match-owned dating apps Tinder and Hinge, which previously allowed users to link Instagram profiles to showcase their posts.
Day One, a journaling app owned by Automattic, is also impacted. Previously, users could import Instagram photos and posts into their journals, a key feature for the app's Premium version. However, with Meta shutting down the Instagram Basic Display API on December 4, 2024, third-party apps can no longer access Instagram data like personal photos or posts.
Developers have been urged to switch to the new Instagram API, but it only supports business accounts, leaving apps like Day One unable to offer the same functionality. While users' existing Instagram content remains in journals, future imports are no longer possible.

TikTok asks for emergency pause to looming US ban
TikTok is fighting to delay a U.S. sell-off deadline set for January 19th, filing an emergency injunction to halt the order. Last week, the U.S. Court of Appeals upheld the mandate, citing national security concerns. The ruling gives TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, the choice to sell its U.S. operations or face removal from the market.
TikTok argues a ban would devastate American creators and businesses, with estimated losses of $1 billion in small business revenue and $300 million in creator earnings within a month. The platform also points to its $24.2 billion contribution to the U.S. economy in 2023.
While not a direct ban, TikTok sees the forced sale as unfeasible, especially with Chinese government opposition. This standoff may lead to the app’s removal, intensifying TikTok’s efforts to rally support from its U.S. user base.
