STORIES MAKING A SPLASH
TECH
ChatGPT and Instagram go down worldwide
ChatGPT experienced a global outage Thursday morninge, leaving users unable to access the service and seeing messages indicating it was “currently unavailable.” OpenAI quickly identified the issue, began restoring traffic regionally, and confirmed its text-to-video AI platform, Sora, was also affected. Both platforms have since largely recovered, the company assured.
The disruption came shortly after a widespread outage impacted Meta’s major platforms—Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Threads—on Wednesday. Meta reported that it was “99 per cent of the way there” in resolving the issue, with most services returning to normal within an hour. The company apologized for the inconvenience caused to users worldwide.
Meta’s interconnected technical architecture often results in simultaneous outages across its apps. Despite plans to integrate its platforms for seamless interoperability, regulatory challenges appear to have stalled such ambitions for now.

iOS 18.2 is here with new Apple Intelligence features
Apple has started rolling out iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2, delivering major AI enhancements for iPhones and iPads. These updates are likely the last of 2024 and include features available in the U.S., UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, with support for English devices. Similar updates are found in macOS 15.2.
One standout feature for iPhone 15 Pro, 16, and 16 Pro users is Image Playground, an app and Messages extension that generates image suggestions from conversations. You can also create images from your own prompts or photos, but it avoids photorealistic images of people to prevent confusion.
iOS 18.2 also introduces Genmoji, which lets users create custom emojis using descriptions or photos of friends. Siri and Writing Tools are upgraded, now incorporating ChatGPT for tasks like creating itineraries or workout plans, with a daily query limit.

Alabama state auditor calls to establish Bitcoin reserve
Alabama State Auditor Andrew Sorrell has endorsed the creation of a state Bitcoin reserve, telling 1819 News it would boost financial stability and attract business. A cryptocurrency supporter, Sorrell emphasized the importance of early adoption, stating, “Crypto is here to stay, and the fight for which states will benefit from it has begun.”
Sorrell highlighted cryptocurrency’s rapid growth, averaging 55% annual returns over 15 years, and proposed investing in Bitcoin and Ether via exchange-traded funds. Comparing crypto to bonds, he argued, “earning a 4% yield while inflation is 2.7% is barely breaking even.”
Suggesting monthly Bitcoin purchases over two years, Sorrell warned of risks tied to the U.S. dollar. “What happens if the dollar ceases to be the reserve currency of the world?” he asked, framing Bitcoin as a hedge against inflation and financial instability.

Binance and Circle partner to boost USDC adoption
Stablecoin issuer Circle and crypto exchange Binance have formed a strategic partnership to expand the global presence of the USDC stablecoin, as announced by Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire. As part of the collaboration, Binance will increase USDC’s availability across its platform for trading, saving, and payments. The exchange also plans to adopt USDC as a key stablecoin for its corporate treasury, further integrating it into its operations.
Circle will support Binance with various tools to help users maximize their use of USDC, marking a significant shift in the evolving crypto market as both companies prepare for growth in 2025.
