STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

BUSINESS
Amazon workers are striking at multiple delivery hubs

Amazon workers across seven US facilities walked off the job Thursday, launching the "largest" strike against the retailer, according to the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Warehouse workers in cities like New York, Atlanta, and San Francisco are demanding contract talks after the company ignored a 15 December deadline.

The strike is supported by hundreds of picket lines at Amazon sites nationwide. Leah Pensler, a San Francisco worker, said, “We are fighting against a vicious union-busting campaign, and we are going to win.” The Teamsters claim Amazon workers and delivery drivers have the legal right to honor these picket lines.

Despite the walkout, Amazon insists operations will not be impacted during the busy holiday season. The Teamsters, however, argue that delays in packages are a result of Amazon’s refusal to negotiate fairly.

Craig Wright gets one-year sentence for contempt of court

Craig Wright, the Australian who falsely claimed to be Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto, has received a one-year suspended sentence in the UK for contempt of court. On December 19, Judge James Mellor ruled that Wright violated a court order by filing lawsuits against Bitcoin developers. Wright now faces 12 months in jail, suspended for two years, a ÂŁ145,000 fine, and five contempt counts.

The ruling follows a case by the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA), which accused Wright of breaching a July court order that barred him from suing firms over his Satoshi claims. COPA attorney Jonathan Hough called Wright’s lawsuits a “desperate publicity stunt.”

Wright's claims about being Satoshi have fueled speculation over Bitcoin's true creator. Despite his assertions, the UK court rejected his claims in March, and his appeal was denied in October.

Instagram teases upcoming AI video editing features

Meta's Movie Gen, an AI video editing tool previewed earlier this year, is now closer to being available on Instagram. Originally a research project, the tool is set to revolutionize video editing with its seamless AI-powered features. Instagram’s Adam Mosseri teased its potential in a recent video, saying they aim to bring it to the platform in 2025.

In the teaser, Mosseri demonstrated the tool’s capabilities, showing how creators could easily change outfits, adjust backgrounds, or even add accessories. The transitions between these changes were smooth and realistic, hinting at the tool’s potential for seamless edits. Though it’s not perfect yet, Movie Gen could offer creators exciting new possibilities.

Mosseri didn’t confirm a specific launch date but hinted at more updates in the coming months, promising that 2025 will bring new AI-powered video editing tools for Instagram users.

Google's AI accuracy faces scrutiny after review policy shift

AI’s reliability has its quirks, but accuracy in evaluations is crucial. However, Google reportedly directed contractors evaluating Gemini to assess all prompts, even outside their expertise, TechCrunch reveals. This change, introduced via outsourcing firm GlobalLogic, challenges the prior protocol allowing contractors to skip prompts far removed from their knowledge, like asking a doctor about laws.

Under the new guidelines, contractors must rate what they understand and note areas beyond their expertise, only skipping prompts missing significant information or containing harmful content. This shift aims for broader feedback but raises questions about the quality of evaluations for specialized queries.

One contractor aptly remarked, “Wasn’t skipping supposed to ensure accuracy by routing prompts to experts?” This concern highlights potential trade-offs between comprehensive reviews and the precision critical for AI advancement.
