Encode challenges OpenAI’s for-profit transition
Encode, a nonprofit focused on AI safety, seeks to support Elon Musk’s effort to block OpenAI’s transition to a for-profit company. In a brief to the U.S. District Court, Encode argued this shift would undermine OpenAI’s mission to develop transformative technology prioritizing public safety and benefit.
The brief urged accountability for OpenAI’s claims of advancing artificial general intelligence, emphasizing the need to protect public interests over private profit. Encode’s founder, Sneha Revanur, accused OpenAI of prioritizing financial gains while externalizing global consequences, calling for judicial intervention to safeguard public welfare.
The move has support from AI pioneers like Geoffrey Hinton, a 2024 Nobel Laureate, and Stuart Russell of UC Berkeley. Hinton stressed that OpenAI’s nonprofit roots and safety promises must not be discarded for convenience.

US Treasury says it was hacked by China in 'major incident'
The US Treasury Department was targeted in a cyberattack that compromised documents and workstations, with links to a China-backed Advanced Persistent Threat group. The attack, described as a significant cybersecurity incident, involved unauthorized access to unclassified documents and workstations via a third-party software vulnerability.
The breach came to light on December 8 when BeyondTrust, a third-party provider, alerted US officials that a security key had been used to gain access. The Treasury Department has since partnered with the FBI and CISA to investigate the scope of the attack, though details on what was accessed or how long the systems were exposed remain unclear.
This attack follows an earlier incident in October 2024, when a Chinese hacking group, "Salt Typhoon," breached US telecom carriers, accessing sensitive communications of government officials for months.

Blue Origin inches closer to the first New Glenn flight
Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket is ready for its first flight after completing a successful wet dress rehearsal. The company conducted several countdown attempts, ultimately firing the rocket’s seven engines for 24 seconds. The test included fueling the rocket and simulating a 45,000-pound payload, marking the first time New Glenn operated as an integrated system.
The Federal Aviation Administration has granted Blue Origin a launch license, clearing the way for the rocket’s debut. Though designed for human flight, New Glenn’s first mission will be uncrewed, carrying the Blue Ring Pathfinder on a mission for clients like the Pentagon.
Originally slated for an October launch with NASA satellites, New Glenn’s flight was delayed. While a new date hasn’t been set, the first flight is expected in early 2025, possibly as soon as January 6.
