STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

BUSINESS
Honda and Nissan plan to merge operations

Honda, Nissan, and Mitsubishi are merging operations under a joint umbrella company led by Honda, with the deal expected to finalize in June. This partnership could create a $50 billion automotive giant, potentially surpassing Toyota and Volkswagen in market share.

The merger builds on their earlier agreement to share EV components like batteries and collaborate on self-driving technology. Honda’s president emphasized bold changes over limited partnerships to stay competitive in the fast-evolving industry. Nissan’s experience with EVs and hybrid engines could bolster Honda’s next-generation designs, despite Nissan’s struggles following its 2018 leadership scandal.

This move reflects a growing trend of consolidation among Japanese automakers, driven by the need to adapt to intensifying global competition and rapid technological advancements in the industry.

Bluesky tests new 'Trending Topics' feature

Bluesky has introduced Trending Topics in beta, fulfilling a top user request and echoing similar features on Threads and X (formerly Twitter). This update highlights the most viral discussions on the platform, including topics like "Christmas" and "Wikipedia," influenced by Elon Musk. Users can access the feature via the search bar on desktop and mobile or opt out entirely in settings.

Muted words won’t appear in the Trending section, ensuring a tailored experience. The rollout coincides with Bluesky's milestone of reaching 25 million users, many of whom joined after the US elections, drawn by its engaged community and reduced bot activity compared to X.

Despite its growth, Bluesky still lags behind larger rivals like Threads and X. Users continue to anticipate other features such as bookmarks, editing options, verification badges, and private posts.

ChatGPT went down for the second time this month

ChatGPT faced a major outage on Thursday afternoon, leaving users unable to receive responses and encountering “internal server error” messages. The disruption began around 1:30 PM ET, as reported by Down Detector, and by 2 PM ET, OpenAI confirmed high error rates affecting ChatGPT, its API, and the Sora text-to-video generator.

The issue was linked to a “power issue” at a Microsoft data center, OpenAI’s exclusive cloud provider. The problem affected North America and even disrupted Xbox cloud gaming. Microsoft restored power by 5 PM ET, enabling Sora to come back online at 6:15 PM ET, while ChatGPT achieved full recovery by 11 PM ET.

This outage follows a series of disruptions for ChatGPT in recent months. In June, a widespread issue took the tool offline, and earlier this month, ChatGPT and Sora experienced hours-long downtime shortly after Sora’s release.

Elon Musk's xAI raises $6 billion in fresh funding

Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has secured $6 billion in a Series C funding round, doubling its valuation to $45 billion. Major investors include Andreessen Horowitz, Nvidia, AMD, and Saudi Arabia’s Kingdom Holdings, which contributed $400 million. This brings xAI’s total funding to $12 billion, with funds earmarked for infrastructure, product launches, and advanced R&D.

Notably, only previous xAI investors were invited to participate in this round, with some tied to Musk’s Twitter acquisition receiving access to up to 25% of xAI’s shares. The company is currently training its most powerful AI model yet, focusing on innovative consumer and enterprise products.

Founded last year, xAI introduced Grok, a generative AI powering features on X (formerly Twitter). Known for its “rebellious streak,” Grok tackles “spicy” queries and offers responses that traditional AI systems avoid.
