STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

AI
Qualcomm and Alphabet team up for automotive AI

Qualcomm and Google have teamed up to enable car manufacturers to create custom AI voice assistants for vehicles. This collaboration integrates Qualcomm's Snapdragon Digital Chassis with Google Cloud and Android Automotive OS (AAOS), Google's infotainment platform for cars, to power advanced digital cockpits.

The system includes two new chips from Qualcomm—Snapdragon Cockpit Elite for dashboards and Snapdragon Ride Elite for self-driving features. It offers immersive maps, real-time updates, and unique AI assistants that don't need a smartphone connection, allowing carmakers to build tailored in-car experiences.

Several automakers are embracing AI, with Volkswagen planning to integrate ChatGPT into its voice assistants. AAOS is now used in models from Chevrolet, Honda, Volvo, and Rivian, marking a shift towards more intelligent, connected driving systems.

Meet your own personal AI Agent, for everything…Proxy

Imagine if you had a digital clone to do your tasks for you. Well, meet Proxy…

Last week, Convergence, the London based AI start-up revealed Proxy to the world, the first general AI Agent.

Users are asking things like “Book my trip to Paris and find a restaurant suitable for an interview” or “Order a grocery delivery for me with a custom weekly meal plan”.

You can train it how you choose, so all Proxy’s are different, and personalised to how you teach it. The more you teach it, the more it learns about your personal work flows and begins to automate them.

CRYPTO
Tesla likely still holds $780M in Bitcoin after transfers

Tesla likely still holds its $780 million Bitcoin stash, despite transferring the funds to unidentified wallets on Oct. 15, according to blockchain firm Arkham Intelligence. The 11,509 Bitcoin was split between seven wallets, but Arkham believes Tesla still owns the assets, suggesting these were internal wallet rotations.

Fears of a market dump circulated after the transfers, but Bitcoin's price rose 5% to $69,220 shortly after. The price has since dipped slightly to $67,600. Some speculate that Tesla may be preparing to use the Bitcoin as collateral for a loan, though no further movements have occurred.

If Arkham's analysis is accurate, Tesla remains the fourth-largest corporate Bitcoin holder, behind MicroStrategy and two major mining firms. Tesla executives may provide more details on these transfers during their third-quarter earnings call on Oct. 23.

Meta's Smart Glasses outsell traditional Ray-Bans in select stores

Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses are now the top-selling product in 60% of Ray-Ban stores across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, according to EssilorLuxottica CFO Stefano Grassi. During the company’s recent earnings call, Grassi highlighted the smart glasses as a key driver of sales for the brand.

Despite regulatory delays in rolling out AI features in Europe, Ray-Ban Meta glasses continue to sell well, suggesting that consumers may be more interested in their built-in speakers and cameras than AI functionality. Meta has promised to introduce AI features in the region once compliance issues are resolved.

The strong sales have exceeded Meta’s initial expectations, likely contributing to the company’s decision to extend its partnership with EssilorLuxottica into the next decade, signaling long-term confidence in the smart eyewear market.

Democrats want DOJ to investigate tax prep companies

A group of Democratic lawmakers is urging the Justice Department to prosecute tax prep companies accused of improperly sharing user information with Meta and Google through advertising pixels. Senators Elizabeth Warren, Ron Wyden, Richard Blumenthal, and Representative Katie Porter called for investigations in a letter to the DOJ, citing failures to protect taxpayer privacy.

This effort follows a 2022 report by The Markup, which revealed that tax prep companies shared sensitive financial data via a code known as a pixel. An audit by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) confirmed these companies did not comply with regulations.

The lawmakers emphasize that the DOJ must enforce relevant laws, noting penalties for knowingly disclosing tax return information can include up to one year in prison and fines of up to $1,000 per violation.
