Russian court hits Google with a $20 decillion fine
A Russian court has hit Google with a massive fine, calculated at an astronomical $20 decillion, for blocking Russian media channels. This sum far exceeds global GDP, making it a virtually unpayable amount. The fine stems from Google’s 2020 decision to block Russian ultra-nationalist channel Tsargrad on YouTube, following U.S. sanctions against its owner, with additional fines imposed after more Russian channels were banned in 2022.
The court demands Google pay 100,000 rubles ($1,025) daily, doubling each week due to compounding. Local media report that 17 Russian channels, including Zvezda (a Ministry of Defense outlet), are involved in the case.
Google has little presence in Russia since 2022, following asset seizures and staff relocations after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, leaving the search giant largely unaffected by the court's decision.

Elon Musk’s xAI in talks for $40 billion valuation
Elon Musk's AI startup, xAI, is in early discussions to raise several billion dollars in a funding round that could value the company at approximately $40 billion, according to the Wall Street Journal. These talks are still developing, meaning the terms may change or the discussions could fall through.
In May, xAI secured $6 billion in Series B funding, achieving a post-money valuation of $24 billion, with backing from investors like Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital. Launched in July 2023, xAI aims to provide an alternative to OpenAI's ChatGPT.
In March, xAI announced plans to open-source its AI model, "Grok," allowing public access to its underlying technology, similar to initiatives by Meta and France's Mistral. This move positions xAI in the competitive landscape dominated by companies like OpenAI and Google.

X speeds up Community Notes with "Lightning Notes"
X is enhancing its Community Notes, a crowdsourced fact-checking system, by revamping its scoring process. This update allows user-generated notes to appear in under 20 minutes after a post is published, speeding up the response to misinformation.
Introduced in 2022, Community Notes relies on users to fact-check posts and provide additional context, requiring contributors to cite sources. Other users then rate the notes' “helpfulness,” and creators face penalties for flagged posts to discourage monetizing false information. The new “lightning notes” feature promises corrections to go live in as little as 14 minutes and 33 seconds.
While this improvement aims to address criticisms about slow responses to viral misinformation, it's uncertain how often this quick process will occur. With over 800,000 contributors, some posts may still take longer to process through Community Notes.
