STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

Elon Musk asks court to block OpenAI’s transition to for-profit

Elon Musk has asked a California court to block OpenAI's transition to a for-profit model, accusing Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and Microsoft of violating agreements tied to Musk’s foundational role in the company. The motion alleges anticompetitive practices, breaches of OpenAI’s charitable mission, and self-dealing in its shift to a profit-driven enterprise.

Musk, an early OpenAI investor, claims Altman and Brockman broke their pledge to maintain the organization as a nonprofit focused on open-source AI. His latest filing seeks to halt OpenAI’s alleged "self-dealing" and preserve its nonprofit integrity, warning that delays could leave its original mission irreparably compromised.

The lawsuit also accuses OpenAI of securing exclusive agreements with Microsoft to dominate the AI market and pressuring investors to avoid funding competitors like Musk’s xAI, further intensifying concerns of monopolistic behavior.

Meta unveils $10 billion global subsea cable project

Meta is planning a $10 billion project to build a 40,000+ kilometer subsea cable exclusively for its use. According to TechCrunch, the new network will bypass regions with frequent cable disruptions, like the Red Sea and South China Sea, ensuring more secure and reliable global connectivity.

While Meta is already a part-owner of 16 subsea networks, this new cable will be fully owned by the company, giving it complete control to prioritize traffic for its own services. This move aligns with Google’s strategy of privately controlling several cable routes to improve performance and security.

The cable, known as “W,” will likely connect the US, India, South Africa, and Australia. Although still in the planning stages, Meta is expected to reveal more details, including capacity and route, by early 2025.

Bluesky implements 'more aggressive' impersonation policy

Bluesky has tightened its approach to impersonation after third-party analysis highlighted verification issues. The platform is now removing accounts that impersonate others or squat on handles, a problem worsened by the surge in new users. Without a traditional verification system, Bluesky is vulnerable to users pretending to be someone else.

Users can verify themselves by linking accounts to a domain, but it’s more complex than buying a checkmark. Bluesky is working with organizations and public figures to secure verified handles, which may become available to others once verification is completed.

Bluesky now requires parody, satire, or fan accounts to clearly label themselves in both handle and bio. Accounts that engage in identity churning will be banned, and the platform is exploring further verification options.
