Google Unveils Chess Website with AI-Generated Custom Pieces
The launch comes at a perfect moment, coinciding with the 2024 World Chess Championship
Google has launched a new chess website that adds a fun, creative twist to the game. Each time you start a game, the pieces are generated by AI, with custom designs crafted based on your description. You simply type in a short prompt to shape the look of the white pieces, and Google's Imagen AI model will generate them. Then, it creates a matching design for the black pieces.
Once your pieces are set, you can jump into the game. While the site is functional, it’s not quite as feature-rich as a typical chess app. You can adjust the difficulty across three levels and choose from two time controls, but you won’t be able to review past moves or track captured pieces. The default isometric view of the board adds an interesting touch, but it can be a little disorienting compared to the more common top-down view. Fortunately, you can switch to that traditional perspective through the settings.
