STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

Apple is working on a smart doorbell with Face ID

Apple is working on a smart doorbell, according to Bloomberg, as part of its push into the smart home market. This device might feature FaceID technology to scan faces, connect wirelessly to deadbolt locks, and automatically unlock doors for recognized residents.

The project is still in early development and likely won’t launch before 2025. Bloomberg reports it could work with third-party HomeKit-compatible locks or debut alongside a partner lock manufacturer. If released, it would position Apple as a serious competitor to Amazon’s Ring, offering a sleek, privacy-focused alternative.

However, the report also notes potential risks. Any security flaws, such as unauthorized access, could raise concerns and harm Apple’s reputation. Still, the smart doorbell hints at Apple’s bold vision to transform the smart home landscape.

Google proposes changes to address DOJ antitrust concerns

Google has proposed changes to address antitrust concerns raised by the DOJ, which accused the company of monopolistic practices, including forcing Chrome and its search engine onto Android. Despite agreeing with the ruling, Google suggested making its contracts with browser companies and Android device makers more flexible.

The proposal would allow companies like Apple and Mozilla to offer Google Search while also having the ability to use different default search engines across platforms. It would also give device makers more freedom in preloading search engines and Google apps.

While Google plans to appeal the decision, it emphasized that the DOJ’s proposed remedy is excessive and goes beyond the Court’s ruling on distribution agreements. A revised proposal will be submitted in March ahead of the April hearing.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman calls Elon Musk a bully

Elon Musk is a "bully," says OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, though he acknowledges Musk’s early contributions to OpenAI and his status as a "legendary entrepreneur." In a Free Press interview, Altman said Musk "likes to get in fights" and is frustrated he’s no longer involved with OpenAI.

Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but left in 2018, has since launched his own AI venture, xAI, and its chatbot Grok. He has criticized OpenAI’s direction, suing the company over its nonprofit shift and claims of contract breaches and false advertising. His legal battles highlight dissatisfaction with OpenAI’s independence.

Altman suggested Musk’s discontent stems from losing control over OpenAI, saying Musk would back its actions if in charge. He dismissed claims Musk is using political influence, underscoring Musk’s lasting impact on AI innovation.
