STORIES MAKING A SPLASH
FINANCE
Nvidia overtakes Apple as world's most valuable company
Nvidia has reclaimed its position as the world’s most valuable company, surpassing Apple and Microsoft. On October 5, Nvidia's stock surged nearly 3%, pushing its market capitalization to $3.43 trillion, ahead of Apple's $3.38 trillion and Microsoft's $3.06 trillion.
This surge follows Nvidia’s impressive stock growth, nearly tripling this year, driven by strong sales and its focus on accelerated computing and generative AI. The company first became the top contender in June but only briefly held the title. Nvidia’s stock has gained 190% year-to-date, currently trading at $139.91.
While Apple and Microsoft have struggled recently—Apple facing a sales outlook dip and Microsoft lowering its guidance—Nvidia's dominance in AI-related chips, particularly GPUs, positions it for continued growth. UBS forecasts AI revenue could reach $420 billion by 2027.

OpenAI hires Meta's former AR lead to head robotics team
Caitlin Kalinowski, former head of Meta's augmented reality hardware team, is taking on a new role leading a consumer hardware team at OpenAI. With extensive experience in virtual reality and metaverse technologies, Kalinowski previously spearheaded Meta's Orion AR glasses and has worked at Apple as a designer and engineer.
Her new position at OpenAI signals a shift toward consumer robotics, a field distinct from her previous work in the metaverse. Kalinowski expressed excitement on social media about her new role, which will focus on robotics and consumer hardware, marking OpenAI's first major hardware initiative.
While AI hardware is booming, particularly with companies like Nvidia and TSMC, consumer devices powered by AI—such as those incorporating OpenAI’s ChatGPT—have yet to achieve mass-market success. Kalinowski’s leadership could help OpenAI crack this challenge.

Amazon starts drone deliveries in Arizona
After ending its drone delivery program in California, Amazon has launched a new drone-based service in Phoenix, Arizona. Starting today, customers in the West Valley Phoenix Metro Area can receive a selection of Amazon products, including household, beauty, and tech items, delivered by drone. Eligible items weigh five pounds or less, with about 50,000 products available for delivery.
Customers can choose a drone delivery location during checkout, with most orders arriving in under an hour from Tolleson, Arizona. Deliveries are limited to daylight hours and favorable weather conditions, excluding night, heavy rain, or strong winds.
Amazon’s latest MK30 drone is behind the service, boasting improved range, quieter operation, and the ability to fly in rainy conditions. The drone has also been rolled out in College Station, Texas, for prescription deliveries.

Apple is exploring the smart glasses market
Apple is reportedly exploring smart glasses, building on its Vision Pro launch. According to a Bloomberg report, Apple has initiated an internal study called "Atlas," gathering feedback from employees on the potential for smart glasses. The goal is to refine ideas and gauge interest before any public announcements.
This initiative is part of Apple’s strategy to keep product plans under wraps, often testing new concepts within secret internal groups. The study suggests Apple is moving closer to creating its own smart glasses, potentially aiming for a more affordable alternative to the pricey Vision Pro.
In contrast, Meta's collaboration with Ray-Ban has led to successful smart glasses that lack displays but allow users to listen to music, make calls, and capture photos. Apple's focus seems to be on creating lighter, cheaper glasses for a wider audience.
