STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

TECH
YouTube Shorts says goodbye to the 60-second limit

YouTube is rolling out key updates to its Shorts platform, including extending video length to three minutes, introducing templates, and enhancing the Shorts player. These changes are aimed at helping YouTube compete more effectively with TikTok, which already supports longer videos and offers trend-friendly features.

The revamped Shorts player now features streamlined icons, giving more visibility to videos by reducing clutter on the screen. Creator info has also been compressed, though video descriptions are now truncated, requiring users to click "more" for details.

New templates make it easier for creators to jump on trends without needing a separate app like TikTok’s CapCut. Users can now remix Shorts directly, with more features coming soon to further simplify creating content from existing videos on YouTube.

Texas sues TikTok for violating children's privacy

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has sued TikTok, accusing it of violating the state's new child privacy law, the SCOPE Act. This is the first test of the law, which requires social media platforms to verify users' ages and offer parental control features, though parts of it were blocked by a federal judge.

Paxton claims TikTok's parental controls are inadequate, arguing parents can’t fully manage their children's privacy or prevent data sharing and targeted ads. He also criticizes TikTok’s “Family Pairing” tool, saying it’s not practical because teens can reject parental monitoring requests.

TikTok disputes the allegations, stating it offers strong safeguards for teens, including family pairing. This lawsuit adds to TikTok's mounting legal issues, including a potential U.S. ban and a separate Justice Department case on child privacy.

OpenAI launches new ‘Canvas’ ChatGPT interface

OpenAI is beta testing a new feature for ChatGPT called Canvas, available to Plus and Team users, with Enterprise and Edu access coming soon. Canvas provides a dedicated workspace for writing and coding, allowing users to collaborate with ChatGPT more effectively by focusing on specific sections of a project.

Users can open Canvas by typing "use canvas," or it may open automatically when ChatGPT detects it could be useful. This new interface lets users highlight and edit portions of text or code, functioning like a copy editor or code reviewer.

Canvas also offers shortcuts for writing and coding, such as making edits, adjusting length, and fixing bugs. It supports multiple programming languages, helping users streamline their projects. This feature aligns ChatGPT with other AI assistants like Anthropic's Artifacts and Cursor.
