STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

TECH
Instagram rolls out Live broadcasts for close friends

Instagram is launching Close Friends on Instagram Live, allowing users to stream exclusively to a select group of close friends and followers. This new feature permits up to three additional participants in these more intimate broadcasts, facilitating activities like trip planning or collaborative sessions.

Since November, Instagram has extended privacy controls to posts and Reels shared with Close Friends, responding to user demand for more private interactions. The platform notes a growing preference for features like DMs and Close Friends as users seek closer connections with their social circles.

Additionally, Instagram has enhanced its Notes feature, enabling users to share videos as notes and adding celebratory confetti animations for birthday messages. These updates aim to enrich user experiences with personalized and engaging content options.

TECH
YouTube bans premium subscriptions purchased via VPN

YouTube is cracking down on Premium subscribers using VPNs to access cheaper rates in other countries. This week, Reddit users reported having their Premium plans canceled for purchasing subscriptions outside their designated region using a VPN.

VPNs protect user privacy and prevent cyberattacks by hiding IP addresses, allowing users to appear as if they are in a different country. YouTube confirmed to TechCrunch that it can detect discrepancies between a user's signup country and their current location, prompting them to update their billing information.

A Google support agent also informed PCMag that YouTube has begun canceling Premium memberships for users found falsifying their signup country. Affected users receive an email and in-app notification. This enforcement follows a price hike for U.S. subscribers from $12 to $14 per month.

Anthropic introduces Claude 3.5 Sonnet

Anthropic has launched Claude 3.5 Sonnet, a new model aimed at matching or surpassing OpenAI’s GPT-4o and Google’s Gemini across various tasks. It is now available for Claude users on the web, iOS, and for developers.

Claude 3.5 Sonnet sits between Anthropic’s smaller Haiku model and the high-end Opus model. Despite its mid-range position, it outperforms the previous 3 Opus model significantly and is twice as fast. It scored higher than GPT-4o, Gemini 1.5 Pro, and Meta’s Llama 3 400B in several benchmarks.

Anthropic claims Claude 3.5 Sonnet excels in writing and translating code, managing workflows, interpreting charts, and transcribing text from images. Additionally, the new Artifacts feature allows users to interact with generated content directly within the app, enhancing functionality beyond simple text generation.

Amazon expands AI tools for European sellers

Amazon has expanded its generative AI tools to sellers in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the U.K., enabling them to improve product listings by generating descriptions, titles, and other details. Sellers can also enrich existing listings by adding missing information automatically.

This rollout follows Amazon's initial plans to introduce generative AI technology to sellers nine months ago, which was primarily available in the U.S. The U.K. received a quiet launch earlier this month, and now, more than 30,000 sellers in the U.K. and EU are using these AI-enabled tools.

These tools aim to help sellers list products more quickly by generating content based on keywords or images. However, Amazon advises sellers to review the generated content thoroughly to ensure accuracy due to the potential for AI-generated errors.
