STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

TECH
Telegram unveils new monetization tools for creators

Telegram is rolling out new monetization tools for creators, including monthly subscriptions paid with its digital currency, Stars. This feature lets users access exclusive content by subscribing to channels, akin to Patreon. Creators can set their own subscription rates and convert Stars into Toncoin rewards or subsidized ads, with Telegram taking a commission, though the exact rate is undisclosed.

The platform is also introducing Star Reactions, allowing users to support creators directly. Similar to YouTube’s “Super Thanks” and X’s Tips, Star Reactions lets creators keep 100% of the Stars they receive.

These updates build on Telegram’s previous efforts, such as paid content sharing and ad revenue sharing, aiming to enhance creator earnings. The company continues to expand its features as it approaches 1 billion active users.

Apple, Google wallets to support California driver’s licenses

California is now offering mobile driver's licenses through Apple Wallet and Google Wallet. Governor Gavin Newsom announced this update today, noting that while physical IDs are still required, the digital versions will streamline age verification for air travel and at participating businesses.

Newsom highlighted the partnership with Apple and Google as a significant step toward enhancing convenience, privacy, and security for Californians. This move is part of a broader initiative by the California DMV, which has already seen over 500,000 residents adopt the mobile driver’s license (mDL) through the state’s own app.

Following Arizona’s lead in 2022, other states like Maryland, Colorado, Georgia, and Ohio have also embraced mobile ID technology. With Real ID requirements set to take effect in 2025, the expansion of mobile identification is a timely development.

X’s new image generation tool hit by wave of outrage

Elon Musk's AI, xAI, is facing backlash for its image generation capabilities, which lack the strict guidelines seen in other systems like those from OpenAI and Google. Unlike its competitors, xAI's Grok system is designed without limits on generating copyrighted or potentially harmful content, raising concerns over its potential misuse.

The latest version of Grok can create photorealistic images, including misleading or violent content. Examples shared on X include copyrighted characters in violent scenes and politicians appearing to endorse harmful causes. These images, often graphic, have sparked significant outrage.

This controversy follows criticism of Musk's platform, X, for allowing misinformation to spread during recent riots in Britain. Musk's emphasis on "absolute free speech" has drawn further scrutiny, particularly as it relates to the platform's role in public discourse.

Ex-Google CEO claims remote work is hurting the company

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt stirred controversy by attributing the company's failure to anticipate ChatGPT's rise to employees prioritizing remote work over innovation. His remark, made during a Stanford interview, quickly gained attention, leading the university to remove the video from YouTube.

Beyond this headline-grabbing comment, Schmidt also made a bold prediction about AI's future capabilities. He suggested that if TikTok were banned, one could instruct an AI to replicate the app, steal its users, and go viral in under an hour, showcasing his vision of AI's potential.

Although Schmidt stepped down as Google's chairman in 2015, he remains a powerful figure in Silicon Valley, investing in startups like AI firm Mistral. During the same talk, he discussed his close ties with Sam Altman and Elon Musk, highlighting his ongoing influence and connections in the tech industry.
