STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

Apple adopts Biden administration's AI safeguards
Apple has joined other tech giants like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI in adopting voluntary AI safeguards outlined by the Biden administration. These guidelines, announced last July, focus on safety, security, and social responsibility. Companies must address risks such as biases, test for vulnerabilities, watermark AI-generated content, and share trust and safety information with the government and peers.
In line with this, Apple is rolling out AI features under its "Apple Intelligence" suite, integrating tools like ChatGPT through a partnership with OpenAI. This move aims to mitigate regulatory scrutiny and align with responsible AI development.
The White House has confirmed that federal agencies are on track with the 270-day targets set by an Executive Order on AI, addressing safety, security, and transparency issues.

X quietly begins training Grok with user posts
X, formerly Twitter, quietly updated its settings to default user data into its AI training pool for Grok, a conversational AI developed by Elon Musk-owned X. Grok aims to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT but promises less political correctness and more humor. Users concerned about their data being used can find instructions to disable this feature.
The move has caught the attention of the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC), X's European privacy watchdog, which expressed surprise and is seeking clarification from X. The DPC has been in discussions with X regarding data privacy compliance and is awaiting further engagement.
Under the EU’s GDPR, X must have a valid legal basis for processing user data. The default-enabled Grok setting states user posts and interactions may be used for AI training and fine-tuning, potentially shared with xAI, raising questions about data privacy compliance.

WazirX unveils recovery plan after $230M cyberattack
On Saturday, Indian cryptocurrency exchange WazirX revealed a plan to share the $230 million loss from its recent security breach among all customers, sparking controversy. The Mumbai-based firm, which halted trading after the attack compromised half of its reserves, plans to resume operations in about a week with a “fair and transparent” approach.
WazirX will return 55% of holdings to users, locking 45% in USDT-equivalent tokens. This policy affects all users, including those not directly impacted by the breach. The July 18 attack stole over 200 cryptocurrencies, including Shiba Inu (SHIB) and Ethereum.
Users can choose between two options: Option A, which prioritizes recovery and restricts withdrawals, and Option B, which allows trading and withdrawals but has lower recovery priority. Switching between options is allowed under certain conditions.
