STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

NASA captures Hurricane Milton timelapse in space
Hurricane Milton, a massive Category 5 storm, slammed into Florida’s Gulf Coast on Tuesday, just weeks after the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene. The storm prompted the cancellation of over 690 flights, according to Reuters.
NASA astronaut Matthew Dominick shared a stunning timelapse of the hurricane intensifying over the Gulf of Mexico from the International Space Station. The viral video, capturing dense white clouds swirling over the region, has garnered over seven million views on X, leaving viewers awestruck by the storm's immense power.
President Biden urged Floridians to evacuate, calling it a “matter of life and death.” He assured the nation that resources were being deployed to address both Hurricane Milton and the lingering impacts of Hurricane Helene. Despite a slight decrease in wind speed, Milton remains a formidable Category 5 storm.

Court says betting on US congressional elections can resume
Betting on U.S. Congressional elections can resume following a federal appeals court ruling. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit lifted a prior ban on New York startup Kalshi, which had been barred from taking bets on which political party would control the House and Senate after November's elections.
While Kalshi has primarily focused on congressional races, it’s unclear if they will expand to presidential election betting. The court noted it might revisit the ban if the commission presents new evidence regarding potential public harm in the coming weeks.
Kalshi is pushing for government regulation of political bets, but the commission has previously rejected this, citing concerns about election integrity and susceptibility to manipulation. After a previous favorable ruling, Kalshi accepted around $50,000 in bets before the appeals panel intervened.

Elon Musk’s X is cleared to go back online in Brazil
X is back online in Brazil after officials lifted a five-week ban. Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes allowed the platform to resume after the company complied with demands to block certain accounts. The dispute, framed by X as censorship, also led to Starlink's bank accounts being frozen when X initially resisted the court’s orders.
X eventually relented, blocking the accounts and paying nearly $5 million in fines. In a statement, the company expressed pride in restoring access for millions of Brazilians, emphasizing its commitment to free speech within legal limits.
During the outage, competitor Bluesky gained momentum, adding over 2 million users in Brazil. The platform, founded by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, quickly capitalized on X’s absence, becoming a notable alternative in the country.

Russia bans Discord over 'unlawful information posting'
Discord has become the latest tech company banned in Russia, accused of violating local laws aimed at preventing the use of its platform for terrorism, drug sales, and extremist activities, according to TASS. The ban is part of a broader crackdown on American platforms, joining the likes of Meta's Facebook and Instagram, as well as X.
Just a week prior, Russian authorities demanded the removal of around 1,000 items from Discord and Google, targeting content related to extremism, illegal activities involving minors, and LGBT propaganda. Although fines for non-compliance totaled only $36,150, the crackdown reflects increasing restrictions on online communication.
Discord, based in San Francisco, reportedly had 30-40 million users in Russia—about 4% of its global user base. While this is a small fraction, the ban significantly impacts a substantial number of users in the region.
