STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

TECH
X is making more changes to the block button

X is updating its block button, allowing blocked accounts to still view public posts, though they won’t be able to engage with them. Elon Musk confirmed the change on Monday, emphasizing that blocked users will be restricted from interacting but can still see content, unlike the full block feature previously in place.

This shift addresses a workaround where users could log out and still view public posts. Musk noted it was "high time this happened," signaling a move to streamline blocking while still allowing visibility of public content.

While not as drastic as past changes made in 2013, which were quickly reversed due to backlash, this update may still raise concerns. Many use the block feature to protect themselves from unwanted attention, and loosening these restrictions might leave some feeling vulnerable.

TECH
Telegram will now provide some user data to authorities

Telegram CEO Pavel Durov announced a significant policy shift: the app will now provide user IP addresses and phone numbers in response to legal requests. This change comes after a history of the platform being resistant to takedown requests and inquiries about suspected criminals.

To bolster safety, Telegram is also enhancing moderation efforts, employing AI and a human team to filter out "problematic" content. Durov encouraged users to report illegal material, aiming to create a safer environment on the platform.

The impact of these updates on Telegram’s appeal to illicit users remains uncertain. While sharing IPs and phone numbers may help authorities, users can still rely on features like end-to-end encryption and disappearing messages to maintain anonymity. Notably, Durov claims they have never shared user messages with third parties, including governments.

TECH
Apollo Global Management may invest $5 billion in Intel

Apollo Global Management is in talks to invest up to $5 billion in Intel, according to a Bloomberg report. This move could help the chipmaker recover from a nearly 60% stock decline this year, as Intel faces stiff competition from TSMC and Nvidia, along with operational delays. The investment would provide much-needed capital for Intel to modernize its manufacturing and regain market share.

Apollo has a history of investing in struggling companies, recently acquiring a 49% stake in Intel's $11 billion Irish manufacturing venture. The proposed $5 billion investment highlights Apollo's commitment to supporting Intel’s turnaround.

If finalized, the deal could allow Intel to enhance its chip designs and expand production, especially in Europe and the U.S., helping it stay competitive in the fast-evolving semiconductor industry.
