STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

Brazil blocks X after Elon Musk ignores court orders

On Saturday, Brazil enforced a court-ordered suspension of Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, blocking access nationwide. This action followed Musk's refusal to appoint a legal representative in the country, a requirement under Brazilian law.

In response, Brazilians, including President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, began saying farewell to X, sharing links to alternative social media profiles. Attempts to access X via the web or app resulted in error messages.

The suspension was ordered by Brazil’s Supreme Court after Justice Alexandre de Moraes warned Musk to comply within 24 hours or face a nationwide block. Despite Musk’s criticism, accusing de Moraes of stifling free speech, Lula emphasized that all foreign investors in Brazil must adhere to the country's laws. The platform will remain blocked until X complies.

California lawmakers pass bills to ban deepfakes

California lawmakers have passed several bills aimed at regulating the artificial intelligence industry and combating deepfakes. These include measures to ban AI-generated deepfakes in elections and require social media platforms to remove deceptive content 120 days before and 60 days after Election Day. Campaigns would also need to disclose if they use AI-altered materials in ads.

The proposals, passed during the final week of the legislative session, now head to Governor Gavin Newsom's desk. Newsom, who has until September 30 to act, indicated in July that he plans to sign the election deepfake crackdown but hasn't commented on other AI-related bills.

Newsom has previously cautioned that overregulation could stifle California’s tech industry, though he has yet to take a definitive stance on the broader AI legislation.

AnandTech shuts down after 27 years

After nearly three decades, hardware enthusiast site AnandTech is shutting down. Ryan Smith, the final editor-in-chief, announced the closure, citing the declining market for written tech journalism. “Few things last forever,” he wrote, noting that it’s time for AnandTech to step aside for the next generation of tech journalists.

Founded in 1997 by Anand Lal Shimpi, AnandTech gained a loyal following with its in-depth reviews of motherboards, chips, and other hardware components. Shimpi retired from journalism in 2014 to join Apple, contributing to the development of the M series Apple Silicon chips.

AnandTech was known for resisting the trend toward sensationalist content, focusing instead on high-quality, detailed analysis. This commitment made it a go-to resource for PC builders, academics, and anyone interested in the intricacies of computer hardware.
