STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

Former Twitter board member sues Elon Muskā€™s X

Former Twitter Chairman Omid Kordestani has sued Elon Musk, alleging that he is owed over $20 million in shares that Musk has refused to pay out. Kordestani, who served as executive chairman from 2015 to 2020 and stayed on the board for two additional years until Muskā€™s $44 billion acquisition, claims that the bulk of his compensation was in stock.

The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco Superior Court, accuses X Corp. of benefiting from Kordestaniā€™s seven years of service without fulfilling the agreed-upon stock payments. Kordestaniā€™s lawyers argue that the company is trying to reap the rewards of his contributions without compensating him fairly.

This lawsuit adds to a series of legal challenges Musk faces from former Twitter leaders. In March, four ex-executives sued Musk for allegedly withholding over $128 million in severance payments.

Russia and Venezuela block messaging app Signal

Russia and Venezuela have blocked access to the encrypted messaging app Signal. In Russia, the telecommunications watchdog Roskomnadzor imposed the block, citing legal violations aimed at preventing the appā€™s use for extremist purposes. Despite this, cybersecurity tracker NetBlocks confirmed that Signal remains accessible with "censorship circumvention" enabled.

In Venezuela, the block follows a disputed July presidential election, where President NicolĆ”s Maduro was declared the winner without evidence, sparking protests. The governmentā€™s move seems to target dissent, with other social media platforms, including X, also facing temporary bans.

Both countriesā€™ actions reflect broader efforts to suppress online dissent and control information, highlighting the increasing use of digital censorship to silence opposition.

Apple announces new fee structure for apps in the EU

Apple is updating its App Store rules in the EU following charges of violating the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The new rules allow developers to link to external purchases, but Apple will impose hefty fees on those who use this option, charging commissions on sales made on any platform, not just iOS.

Starting this fall, EU developers can include unlimited external links in their apps, directing users to outside purchase options. However, using these links triggers a "store services fee" of up to 20% on sales made within a year of the app's installation, even if the purchase is made on a different platform. An additional 5% fee applies to first-year purchases.

Combined, these fees could result in Apple taking up to a 25% commission on off-platform sales, including subscriptions and renewals. Some developers may qualify for reduced fees, depending on their specific programs.
