STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

YouTube now lets you request removal of AI-generated content that uses your likeness

YouTube quietly added a new policy last month that lets users request the removal of AI-generated videos using their likeness. TechCrunch’s Sarah Perez first reported on the update, noting that users can now flag videos where AI has created or altered content to resemble them.

According to YouTube, removal requests will hinge on factors such as whether the content is synthetic or altered, how recognizable the individual is, and whether it could be interpreted as parody or satire. Additionally, videos featuring public figures in sensitive contexts like crime or endorsement may be scrutinized more closely, especially in an election year.

This policy, categorized under privacy violations rather than misleading content, requires complainants to make initial claims directly. Exceptions apply for minors, individuals without computer access, or deceased persons, where alternative processes are in place.

Japan sets new world record internet speed

Japanese researchers have achieved a groundbreaking milestone in internet speed, setting a new world record of 402 terabits per second using commercially available optical fiber. Led by Japan’s NICT, the team harnessed all transmission bands of standard fibers and advanced amplification technologies to achieve this feat, potentially revolutionizing future telecom networks.

This achievement is monumental, surpassing the average US broadband speed of 248.27 Mbps by over 1.6 million times. The technology promises to significantly enhance optical communication infrastructure, crucial as data demands continue to rise rapidly.

While the record-breaking speed enables extraordinary capabilities like downloading 12,500 films in a single second, its application over vast distances remains a future ambition due to current limitations under ideal lab conditions.

Meta accused of breaching EU rules with new ad model

Facebook parent Meta faces allegations from the European Commission for violating new digital competition rules with its advertising practices. The Commission claims Meta's "pay or consent" model, where users must choose between paying for an ad-free experience or accepting personalized ads, violates user rights by coercing consent to personal data use without offering an equivalent alternative.

If the Commission's preliminary findings hold, Meta could be fined up to 10% of its global annual revenue, totaling $13.5 billion based on 2023 figures. Meta disputes these accusations, setting the stage for potential legal battles amid heightened scrutiny under the EU's Digital Markets Act.

This scrutiny follows similar actions against Apple and investigations into Google's parent company, Alphabet, under the same regulatory framework.
