Vodafone to merge crypto wallets with SIM cards

Vodafone, a UK telecom provider, plans to fuse blockchain with SIM cards, enabling cryptocurrency wallets for smartphone users.

‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‎

This initiative coincides with Vodafone Group's financial strategy involving Vodafone Idea Ltd., a company in India where Vodafone holds a 45% stake, acquiring approximately $3 billion in debt, including $1.8 billion in loans, within two years.

‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‎

David Palmer, Vodafone's Blockchain Lead, highlighted their vision during an interview with Yahoo Finance Future Focus. He outlined the intention to integrate blockchain into SIM cards, emphasizing the potential scale: "By 2030, more than 20 billion mobile phones, many smartphones, will be operational." Palmer forecasted a substantial rise in smartphone usage and crypto wallet adoption, estimating eight billion smartphones and 5.6 billion crypto wallets by 2030, potentially covering nearly 70% of the global population.

Warren Buffett compares AI to nuclear weapons

Warren Buffett, co-founder of Berkshire Hathaway and the ninth richest person globally, discussed the rise of AI deepfakes and the growing threat of scammers at the company's annual shareholder meeting. Despite his substantial wealth increasing by $16 billion in the first five months of 2024, Buffett emphasized the significance of AI, likening its potential misuse to the dangers of nuclear weaponry.

‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‎

During a Q&A session, Buffett admitted his limited knowledge of AI but highlighted its profound implications, particularly in illicit financial activities. He recounted encountering a deepfake that eerily replicated his appearance and speech, expressing concern about the potential for widespread scamming facilitated by AI technology.

‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‎

Buffett's apprehension towards AI's darker potentials isn't new, considering Berkshire Hathaway's significant investment in Apple, now surpassed in value by Microsoft, which notably invested in OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT.

ICONIQ Growth raises $5.75B seventh flagship fund

ICONIQ Growth, a unit of ICONIQ Capital, exceeded expectations by raising $5.75 billion across two funds, surpassing its $5.21 billion reported figure. Launched in 2011, ICONIQ Capital manages assets for tech luminaries like Mark Zuckerberg and Jack Dorsey. This achievement marks a significant increase from the previous Fund VI target of $3.75 billion.

‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‎

In contrast, many other large-growth investors struggled to meet their fundraising goals. Tiger Global notably closed its latest venture capital fund at $2.2 billion, falling short of its intended $6 billion. Unlike Tiger Global, ICONIQ Growth hasn't faced criticism for rapid or overpriced investments, instead focusing on secondary positions, which has likely contributed to its successful fundraising efforts.

‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‎

The substantial fundraise suggests investor satisfaction with ICONIQ Growth's investment strategy, which has seen notable successes in recent years.

Instagram's 'Add Yours' sticker now lets you share songs

Instagram just introduced exciting updates for Stories, featuring interactive stickers. One standout is the Add Yours Music sticker, enabling users to share favorite songs and invite followers to join in by sharing related tracks. The catch? The song must be in Instagram's music library.

‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‎

In collaboration with Dua Lipa's new album, "Radical Optimism," Instagram promotes the use of its music stickers with her tracks. Additionally, the new Reveal sticker adds a layer of mystery by blurring content, encouraging followers to engage through direct messages.

‎‎‏‏‎ ‎‎

A Polaroid-inspired Frames sticker adds retro charm to photos, requiring followers to shake their phones or tap a button to unveil the image. This feature, previewed at Coachella, aligns with Instagram's emphasis on Stories and direct messages for engagement growth.
