STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

CRYPTO
ZachXBT flags Lazarus-linked addresses worth $61M

Blockchain investigator ZachXBT revealed seven wallet addresses linked to North Korean hackers Lazarus, containing 891.13 Bitcoin. This disclosure follows ZachXBT's earlier research resulting in authorities freezing $3.8 million in digital assets associated with the group.

In an analysis on April 29, ZachXBT detailed how Lazarus laundered $200 million from 25 hacks since 2020. The investigation showed the group utilizing peer-to-peer markets and crypto-mixing services to convert stolen crypto to fiat.

ZachXBT identified $44 million laundered through Paxul and Noones, with usernames "EasyGoatfish351" and "FairJunco470" matching deposit and trading patterns. The report noted a shift to Tether before converting to fiat, signaling Lazarus's reactivation in early 2024, as they moved $1.2 million in assets on Jan. 8.

TECH
Bumble buys community building app Geneva

Bumble, the dating app giant, has acquired Geneva, an online platform focusing on forming real-world groups and clubs, signaling a shift towards fostering friendships and communities.

While specific terms remain undisclosed, Bumble's CEO, Lidiane Jones, expressed the company's strategic interest in acquisitions aligning with its long-term mission during a recent earnings call. Geneva, founded in 2019 and backed by significant investors, facilitates connections among like-minded individuals for various activities, potentially hinting at Bumble's broader vision for expanding beyond one-on-one connections.

The acquisition suggests Bumble's intent to integrate Geneva's technology to enhance its friendship product, although the precise fate of Geneva as a standalone platform remains uncertain.

US NTIA kicks off 6G request for comment

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration is seeking comment on how the U.S. can bolster the development of 6G technology. This initiative follows the U.S. Department of Commerce's efforts to shape policies supporting advancements in wireless technology.

As the wireless industry gears up for 6G, NTIA aims to gather insights to guide government engagement in fostering its growth and deployment. The Request for Comment focuses on fostering 6G success, addressing safety and security concerns, and ensuring equitable access to its benefits.

NTIA's inquiry delves into various aspects of 6G, including its societal impact, timeline for trials and commercial availability, and its potential to enhance network resilience during emergencies. Notably, the RFC excludes spectrum issues and invites input from stakeholders within 90 days of its publication in the Federal Register.

Apple fights $2B antitrust fine over Spotify complaint

Apple is challenging a $1.95 billion fine from the European Commission for allegedly hindering competition from music-streaming rivals like Spotify. The Commission fined Apple in March, accusing it of abusing its market dominance by preventing music apps from informing users about cheaper subscription options outside the app.

The EU demanded Apple "remove anti-steering provisions" in the European Economic Area (EEA). Apple revised its App Store rules, allowing music apps in the EEA to inform users of alternative purchasing methods and include links to other websites for digital music subscriptions.

Apple has filed a suit in the EU's General Court in Luxembourg to challenge the decision. The Commission is prepared to defend its ruling, which Apple claims was made without credible evidence of consumer harm, ignoring the competitive nature of the market.
