STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

TECH
US sues Photoshop maker Adobe for hiding fees

The US government is suing Adobe for allegedly hiding fees and making subscription cancellations difficult. The Department of Justice claims Adobe enrolls consumers in its most expensive subscription plan without clearly disclosing the terms. Adobe allegedly hides the annual plan's early termination fee in fine print, which can be hundreds of dollars.

The DOJ alleges Adobe's cancellation process is complicated, requiring navigation through multiple web pages and pop-ups, often ambushing customers with termination fees. Similar issues occur with phone and live chat cancellations, where calls or chats are dropped, forcing customers to re-explain their reasons.

The lawsuit targets Adobe executives Maninder Sawhney and David Wadhwani, accusing them of directing or participating in these deceptive practices, which the DOJ claims violate federal consumer protection laws.

BUSINESS
Subscription vitamin company Care/of shuts down

Care/of, known for its personalized vitamin subscriptions, announced the cessation of all subscriptions starting June 17 and will no longer accept new orders. The decision follows earlier disclosures of impending layoffs due to funding constraints, affecting all 143 employees by July 3.

In a recent Instagram post, Care/of expressed gratitude to customers while acknowledging financial limitations: "We unfortunately no longer have funding to operate in the way we have been." The company hinted at potential future options but did not confirm any plans for revival at this time.

Founded in 2016, Care/of allowed users to personalize their vitamin regimens through a lifestyle quiz. Despite initial success and substantial funding totaling $46 million from investors like Bayer, the company faced challenges following Bayer's decision to discontinue further investment.

TECH
Apple plans to slim down all of its products

Apple is reviving the trend of ultra-thin devices, starting with its recent launch of the OLED iPad Pro marketed as the thinnest Apple device ever. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that Apple plans to extend this trend across its product line, aiming to introduce a significantly slimmer iPhone by 2025. The company is also working on thinner MacBook Pro models and Apple Watches.

This strategy represents a notable departure from recent years, where Apple's devices generally maintained their size or even increased in dimensions. If these plans materialize, Apple could set a new standard for thinness in the tech industry, prompting competitors to respond with their own innovations.

The move underscores Apple's ongoing pursuit of sleeker, lighter products, potentially reshaping consumer expectations and sparking a fresh competitive dynamic among tech manufacturers.
