STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

BUSINESS
Uber is reportedly considering an Expedia acquisition

Uber is reportedly exploring the acquisition of Expedia, one of the world’s largest travel booking companies, valued at $20 billion. While discussions are still in early stages and no formal offer has been made, Uber is working with advisers to assess the potential deal, according to the Financial Times.

Although Uber's CEO Dara Khosrowshahi was once Expedia’s CEO and remains on its Board, sources suggest he may not be directly involved in the talks. The idea for the acquisition is said to have come from a third party, not Khosrowshahi himself.

Uber has long aimed to evolve into a broader travel platform, already offering train, bus, and flight bookings in some markets. With recent acquisitions like Postmates and Drizly, and its profitability in 2023, Uber may be well-positioned to make a move on Expedia.

Former OpenAI CTO seeks funding for new AI startup

Mira Murati, former CTO of OpenAI, is raising funds for her new AI startup, aiming to develop cutting-edge products based on proprietary models. Although it’s still unclear if Murati will step into the CEO role, her impressive track record could help the venture secure over $100 million in funding, according to Reuters.

Barret Zoph, a leading researcher who left OpenAI alongside Murati in late September, is also rumored to be involved in the new company. Murati has been actively recruiting OpenAI employees, assembling a strong team to drive her vision forward.

At OpenAI, Murati played a pivotal role in groundbreaking projects like ChatGPT and DALL-E, as well as in the company’s multibillion-dollar partnership with Microsoft. Her leadership and influence have made her a prominent figure in AI, fueling anticipation around her latest move in the tech world.

Drone maker DJI sues Pentagon over ‘military’ designation

DJI has sued the US Department of Defense over being labeled a "Chinese military company," challenging the designation as false. DJI, the world's largest privately owned drone seller, argues it is not owned or controlled by the Chinese military and primarily serves first responders, businesses, and hobbyists.

The company claims the Pentagon's designation has caused significant financial and reputational damage, leading to lost contracts and bans from working with multiple federal agencies. Despite submitting a delisting petition in July 2023, DJI says the Department refused to meaningfully engage.

In its complaint, DJI alleges the Pentagon’s reasoning was flawed and based on outdated information. The company is now asking the court to declare the designation unconstitutional, claiming it violates due-process rights and lacks legal justification.
