Twitter lays off another 200 employees
Twitter has laid off at least 200 employees, or about 10% of its workforce, the New York Times reported on Sunday.
The cuts reportedly hit product managers, data scientists, and engineers who worked on machine learning and site reliability, which helps keep Twitter’s various features online.
Zoë Schiffer, managing editor at Platformer, first confirmed that product manager Esther Crawford was among those Twitter let go over the weekend.
Crawford oversaw various projects at Twitter, including the company’s Twitter Blue verification subscription and upcoming payments platform.
After Elon Musk took over Twitter in October last year, she quickly went viral for sleeping on the office floor to handle the “extremely hardcore” workload.
Martijn de Kuijper, the founder of the now-shuttered Revue newsletter platform that Twitter acquired in 2021, was also laid off. “Waking up to find I’ve been locked out of my email,” he tweeted. “Looks like I’m let go.”
This latest round of layoffs is the eighth one since Musk assumed ownership of Twitter. As of January, the company’s daily revenue was down 40% year-over-year.
EA founder joins Web3 gaming startup
Trip Hawkins, the founder and first CEO of video game giant Electronic Arts (EA), has made the jump from Web2 to Web3.
Hawkins on Friday was announced as co-founder and chief strategy officer of Games for a Living, a Barcelona-based startup that is developing AAA-quality blockchain games for PC, consoles, and mobile platforms.
“I’m confident that blockchain, combined with our vision, can create a new gaming paradigm for the benefit of all,” Hawkins said in a press release. “We plan to do it in a way that helps enhance game performance and value for players, while keeping things fun.”
Games for a Living was co-founded by Manel Sort, former vice president of Candy Crush Saga developer King. The two game industry veterans previously worked together at Hawkin's failed gaming startup, Digital Chocolate.
