STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

AI
Tribeca Festival and OpenAI announce 'Sora Shorts'

The Tribeca Film Festival will showcase five AI-generated short films using OpenAI’s Sora model, a groundbreaking move for the event. These films, which transform text into video clips, mark a significant integration of AI technology into the festival’s lineup.

Filmmakers, granted exclusive access to the Sora model, must adhere to agreements negotiated during recent AI-related strikes. OpenAI's COO, Brad Lightcap, emphasizes the importance of filmmaker feedback in refining Sora for broader creative use.

Scheduled for a June 15 screening, these shorts will be followed by discussions with the creators, sparking conversations about the intersection of AI and storytelling. This development mirrors increasing collaborations between AI firms and media outlets, suggesting a future where AI plays a pivotal role in content creation.

TikTok explores a US-only version of its algorithm

A report from Reuters says that TikTok is working on a version of its recommendation algorithm separate from its Chinese counterpart, Douyin, to demonstrate independence from ByteDance. This project might take over a year to complete, aiming to assure US lawmakers of the app's autonomy from its Beijing-based parent company.

Executives have discussed this initiative in company meetings and on the internal messaging platform, Lark. However, separating the source code could limit TikTok's access to its parent company's substantial engineering resources.

TikTok refuted the Reuters report, asserting its commitment to accuracy. Despite previous efforts to demonstrate US independence, such as "Project Texas," skepticism remains regarding TikTok's ability to avoid a US ban. Though no immediate plans to split from ByteDance exist, separating the code could set the stage for divesting US assets in the future.

ElevenLab's launches AI sound effect generator

ElevenLabs has rolled out a new tool enabling users to create sound effects by inputting prompts. Initially announced in February, the feature is now available for all users. It allows prompts like "waves crashing" or "birds chirping" to generate corresponding sound snippets.

Users can also generate musical clips up to 22 seconds long, from guitar loops to jazz saxophone solos, using similar prompts. Free users can generate up to 60 sound effects monthly, with a 10,000-character limit. Attribution to "elevenlabs.io" is required for published content containing the generated sounds.

The startup utilized Shutterstock's audio library to train its model. Despite limitations on certain prompts, such as those violating its Prohibited Content and Uses Policy, various industries have shown interest, including video game developers and social media creators.
