Sony and Apollo in talks to acquire Paramount

Paramount Global is in acquisition talks with Sony and Apollo, as reported by The New York Times. This follows the collapse of exclusive merger discussions with Skydance and the recent departure of CEO Bob Bakish amid substantial first-quarter losses.

Sony and Apollo Global Management proposed a $26 billion all-cash bid for Paramount while the company was considering merging with Skydance Media. Although Skydance had tentatively agreed to acquire Paramount's controlling stake from Shari Redstone, talks fizzled out, prompting Paramount to explore other options.

Paramount's special committee, as per sources cited by The Times, voted to engage in negotiations with Sony and Apollo while also pursuing discussions with Skydance. However, regulatory obstacles and shareholder dissent over Redstone's stake deal pose challenges to any potential sale or merger, according to reports by Variety and The Wall Street Journal.

Jack Dorsey steps down from Bluesky's board

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey has stepped down from the board of Bluesky, the decentralized social media platform he co-founded. Bluesky expressed gratitude for Dorsey's contributions while confirming his departure and announcing the search for a replacement who shares their vision of empowering users.

This announcement follows a user's inquiry to Dorsey about his status on the board, to which he simply replied, "no." TechCrunch notes Dorsey's recent activity, including unfollowing accounts on X and praising Elon Musk's platform as "freedom technology."

Details surrounding Dorsey's departure from the board remain undisclosed by both Bluesky and Dorsey himself. Currently, the board consists of CEO Jay Graeber and Jabber/XMPP inventor Jeremie Miller, with Dorsey having initially supported Bluesky in 2019 as a project aimed at creating an open-source social media standard.

Tech Special

Apple's upcoming iPad Pro will feature the M4 chip, designed to enhance AI tasks in iPadOS. Apple touts the M4's neural engine, capable of 38 trillion operations per second (TOPS), positioning it as a formidable competitor in AI performance.

Built on second-gen 3nm technology, the M4 boasts a 10-core CPU with a configuration of four performance and six efficiency cores, offering a 50% performance boost over the prior M2 chip. Additionally, its 10-core GPU supports advanced features like dynamic caching and ray tracing, promising four times the rendering speed compared to its predecessor.

While Apple emphasizes the M4's capabilities, notably absent is the specific NPU core count. However, with each iteration of Apple's M-series chips, including the M4, the NPU's TOPS capability sees significant enhancements, indicative of Apple's commitment to pushing AI capabilities forward.

TikTok has initiated a legal challenge against a U.S. law that could result in its ban, citing concerns over constitutional rights. The company's lawsuit contends that the "Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act" violates the First Amendment by mandating a divestiture from its parent company ByteDance, which it claims is not feasible.

This legal action marks the beginning of what is expected to be a protracted legal battle against the law passed recently. TikTok faces a deadline to sever ties with ByteDance within a year or risk removal from U.S. app stores, but legal maneuvers by TikTok could stall this process.

TikTok's lawsuit raises broader concerns about free speech and potential implications for other digital platforms. The company argues that the law sets a dangerous precedent by allowing the government to force divestitures based on speculative national security concerns without concrete evidence of harm.
