Tesla teases robotaxi ride-hailing app
Tesla has previewed its forthcoming ride-hailing feature in its app, offering a glimpse into the upcoming August launch of its robotaxi service. Although details remain sparse, the mock-ups displayed Uber-like functionalities, including remote temperature control for summoned rides.
CEO Elon Musk's long-standing promise of self-driving ride-hailing services will see fruition with the anticipated August 8 robotaxi debut. However, the exact rollout date for this service remains uncertain, with Tesla indicating ongoing development efforts in its latest earnings report.
Dubbed "Cyber Cab" by Musk, the envisioned service blends elements of Airbnb and Uber, allowing Tesla owners to integrate their vehicles into the fleet. This hybrid approach enables owners to manage their vehicle's availability, choosing between private use, limited user access, or open availability to all riders.
Perplexity valued at $1 billion in funding round
Perplexity AI, a generative AI search engine startup, announced a $62.7 million funding round, doubling its valuation to over $1 billion. The investment, led by Daniel Gross, former head of AI at Y Combinator, included participation from new investors like Stanley Druckenmiller and Garry Tan, as well as existing backers including Nvidia Corp. and Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon.
The latest funding round, totaling $165 million, follows reports of Perplexity seeking additional funding since January. TechCrunch reported potential further funding of at least $250 million, which could raise the company's valuation to anywhere between $2.5 billion and $3 billion.
Perplexity aims to revolutionize search with its AI chatbot, departing from traditional keyword-based search engines like Google. Users can ask questions naturally, receiving intuitive, multimedia-rich responses with verifiable citations, enhancing the search experience.

The Senate has passed a bill, part of a foreign aid package, to potentially ban TikTok if its parent company, ByteDance, fails to sell it within a year. With a vote of 79-18 on Tuesday, following the House's overwhelming approval over the weekend, the bill now awaits President Biden's signature, scheduled for Wednesday, according to the White House.
Earlier in March, the House had passed a similar standalone bill, setting a six-month timeframe for TikTok's sale or ban, which the Senate did not pursue. This time, the bill was linked with vital foreign aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, necessitating the Senate's action.
ByteDance has indicated it will contest the decision in court. The company has been given a nine-month window to effect the sale, with a possible 90-day extension, effectively allowing a year to finalize the deal.
X, formerly Twitter, is rolling out a dedicated TV app for its social network videos, CEO Linda Yaccarino announced. The app, resembling YouTube's interface, aims to deliver real-time, engaging content to smart TVs. It will boast a trending video algorithm and AI-driven topic organization for personalized viewing.
Cross-device viewing will allow seamless transitions from mobile to TV screens. Enhanced video search and compatibility with most smart TVs are also highlighted. Yaccarino anticipates the app's availability on "most smart TVs" soon, although an official launch date is pending.
This move is part of Yaccarino's push to transform the platform into a "video-first" space for free speech, hosting original shows featuring prominent figures like Tulsi Gabbard and Jim Rome. Notably, last month, Elon Musk canceled a talk show deal with former CNN anchor Don Lemon after his appearance on the first episode.
