STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

TECH
Canada shuts down TikTok's Canadian offices

Canada has ordered ByteDance to shut down TikTok Technology Canada, Inc., citing national security risks, though the app remains available for use. Consumers can still create content, and businesses can advertise on TikTok. François-Philippe Champagne, Canada’s Minister of Innovation, framed platform usage as a personal choice but offered no further details on the cited risks.

ByteDance has long faced scrutiny over allegations of data misuse and potential ties to China, though it has consistently denied these claims. The closure affects “hundreds” of jobs across operations, engineering, and marketing in Canada, where the company had been actively hiring.

With around 15 million Canadian users—41% of the population—TikTok’s popularity is undeniable, particularly among users aged 18 to 24. However, its widespread use, including by children, has sparked ongoing debates about data privacy and mental health concerns.

Australia proposes social media ban for under-16s

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has proposed a groundbreaking ban on social media for children under 16, citing online safety concerns. The law would require platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube to verify users’ ages or face hefty fines. No penalties would apply to parents or children who bypass the rules, and no exemptions would allow minors with parental consent to access these platforms.

Albanese declared, “Social media is doing harm to our kids, and I’m calling time on it,” reflecting widespread concern among Australian families. The plan aims to hold tech companies accountable for protecting young users, signaling a tougher stance on online regulation.

Meta, the parent of Facebook and Instagram, argued for a simpler solution, suggesting age verification and parental consent could be managed through app stores, streamlining enforcement for both families and platforms.

AI SPECIAL

AI SPECIAL
Google's AI video tool now available for businesses

A new AI-powered tool, Google Vids, is transforming video creation on select Workspace editions. Built on the Gemini AI model, it helps users craft workplace and marketing videos using Google Drive files or written prompts. Users can begin with templates, generate scripts via the “Help me create” feature, or start from scratch.

With its virtual studio, Google Vids allows seamless integration of personal photos, videos, and voice recordings, making customization simple. While it doesn’t generate videos from nothing like tools such as Runway’s Gen-2, it compiles slideshows using media and text input, perfect for collaborative projects in real time.

This feature is rolling out to Business Standard, Business Plus, and Enterprise members, offering a fresh way to streamline video production directly within Google Workspace.

AI SPECIAL
Even Microsoft Notepad has AI now

Microsoft is adding AI-powered tools to its apps, starting with a new Rewrite feature in Notepad. Available to Windows Insiders, Rewrite can adjust sentences by changing tone, length, or format. Users simply highlight text, right-click, or press Ctrl+I to see AI-generated suggestions in a pop-up menu. For traditionalists, the feature can be disabled in app settings.

Notepad isn’t the only app getting smarter. Microsoft Paint is introducing Generative Fill and Generative Erase, allowing users to enhance images with text prompts or remove elements by selecting areas with a brush. These updates aim to bring creative AI tools to everyday applications.

After decades without spell check, Notepad is leaping forward with AI features that rewrite text and even help with visuals in Paint, marking a significant shift for Microsoft’s classic apps.
