STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

OpenAI is reportedly moving away from its non-profit structure
Sam Altman told OpenAI staff that the company will shift away from its non-profit-controlled structure next year, moving toward a more traditional for-profit model, according to Fortune. While Altman didn’t elaborate on details, a spokesperson confirmed that OpenAI remains committed to AI benefiting everyone, with its non-profit mission still central.
Founded in 2015 as a non-profit, OpenAI initially relied on donations but later created a for-profit subsidiary to support rising costs. Currently, its non-profit oversees a for-profit arm that manages investments from companies like Microsoft.
Under this setup, profits for investors are capped, with anything beyond that returning to the non-profit. OpenAI’s revenue has surged, reportedly doubling in the first half of the year, driven by the success of ChatGPT's subscription service.

NASA is giving the moon its own time zone
NASA is developing a new lunar time system, aiming to establish Coordinated Lunar Time (LTC) by 2026. The initiative, directed by an April policy memo from the White House, involves collaboration with U.S. government agencies and international standards organizations.
The need for a lunar time zone stems from Einstein's theory of relativity, which reveals that time moves slightly faster on the Moon due to its weaker gravity. This difference, about 56 microseconds per day, could jeopardize future missions requiring precise calculations.
NASA’s timing leader, Cheryl Gramling, highlighted the stakes, explaining that 56 microseconds could equate to a 168-football-field difference in positioning for orbiting astronauts. Global stakeholders, particularly signatories of the Artemis Accords, will also contribute to LTC’s creation.

23andMe settles data breach lawsuit for $30 million
23andMe will pay $30 million to settle a class-action lawsuit over a data breach affecting 6.9 million customers. The settlement offers compensation and three years of access to a security monitoring program. The breach, disclosed last October, exposed names, birth years, and ancestry data of users of the DNA Relatives feature.
In January 2024, customers filed a lawsuit, accusing 23andMe of failing to protect their data and neglecting to inform certain users that hackers targeted individuals of Chinese and Ashkenazi Jewish heritage. The company attributed the breach to credential stuffing, using logins exposed in previous hacks.
Amidst financial struggles, 23andMe’s stock plummeted, and CEO Anne Wojcicki's attempt to take the company private was rejected. The settlement noted the company might not survive a judgment much larger than the current agreement.
