STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

TECH
Dave Burke retires as VP of Android engineering

Dave Burke, Android's VP of engineering, announced his departure from the role after 14 years, though he will remain at Alphabet to explore "AI/bio" projects. Burke played key roles in developing Nexus and Pixel phones, Chrome for mobile, and Android TV, and led developer tools initiatives.

His move follows significant restructuring at Alphabet, including over 1,000 layoffs in January and the merger of hardware and Android teams in April to focus on AI. This restructuring saw Hiroshi Lockheimer transition to new roles and Rick Osterloh oversee the combined division, with Sameer Samat becoming president of the Android Ecosystem.

In posts on X and LinkedIn, Burke expressed his interest in leveraging AI for drug discovery, particularly for pediatric cancers, and mentioned working with Sundar Pichai to find relevant roles within Alphabet.

TECH
Samsung announces Galaxy Watch FE

Samsung has announced the Galaxy Watch FE, an entry-level smartwatch priced at $199 for Bluetooth and $249.99 for LTE. This move aims to offer a more affordable option compared to Samsung’s flagship models, aligning their lineup more closely with Apple's range of budget, flagship, and premium watches.

The Galaxy Watch FE features a single 40mm size with a 1.2-inch OLED display, the last-gen Exynos W920 chip, 1.5GB RAM, and 16GB storage. It lacks a temperature sensor and has a smaller 247mAh battery but retains a sapphire crystal lens, IP68 rating, 5ATM water resistance, NFC payments, and built-in GPS.

The announcement comes ahead of Samsung's summer Unpacked event, where the Galaxy Watch 7, Galaxy Watch Ultra, and Galaxy Ring are expected. The Bluetooth version of the Galaxy Watch FE will be available in the US on June 24th, with the LTE version arriving later this year.

Tesla investors sue Elon Musk over xAI competition

Tesla shareholders are suing CEO Elon Musk and the automaker’s board over his launch of xAI, which they claim siphons talent and resources away from Tesla. This lawsuit directly challenges Musk's move, following his recent threat to pursue AI development outside Tesla unless granted more voting control.

Musk has consistently argued that Tesla's value extends beyond electric vehicles to include AI capabilities, which have bolstered its stock price to tech company levels, surpassing major automakers combined.

Filed by Cleveland Bakers and Teamsters Pension Fund, the complaint accuses Musk and Tesla's board of breaching fiduciary duties and enriching Musk through xAI. Allegedly, Musk's leadership of xAI violates Tesla’s business ethics code, with shareholders seeking restitution by compelling Musk to relinquish his xAI stake to Tesla.

AI SPECIAL
Apple and OpenAI aren't paying each other yet

Apple and OpenAI's partnership announced at WWDC promises to integrate ChatGPT into Apple's ecosystem without financial transactions. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports Apple values the exposure OpenAI will get from millions of Apple devices as much as monetary payments.

This deal isn’t exclusive to OpenAI. Apple is negotiating with Anthropic and Google to offer their chatbots, with a Google Gemini agreement expected later this year. For now, users can send queries to OpenAI’s GPT-4o on iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, aiming to provide a range of AI services similar to how Safari supports multiple search engines.

Apple plans to monetize these partnerships through revenue-sharing agreements, taking a cut from AI providers that monetize results. This strategy could offset potential revenue losses from traditional search engines, as chatbots and LLMs might divert users away from them.
