STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

Meta cancels plans for high-end mixed-reality headset

Meta is abandoning its plans to develop a high-end mixed reality headset to rival Apple’s Vision Pro, The Information reports. Despite recent buzz about a 2027 release for the device, codenamed La Jolla, Meta halted development last week, partly due to the high cost of MicroOLED displays.

The decision signals a potential shift in Meta’s approach to premium VR. The goal was to keep the headset’s price under $1,000, but the rising costs of production made this difficult. Additionally, the lukewarm reception of Apple's $3,500 Vision Pro and the poor performance of Meta’s own Quest Pro raised doubts about the demand for such a product.

Meta’s CTO, Andrew Bosworth, downplayed the cancellation on Threads, emphasizing that not all prototypes make it to production, and such decisions are routine within the company.

Telegram messaging app CEO arrested in France

Pavel Durov, CEO of Telegram, was arrested on Saturday evening at France’s Bourget airport while disembarking from his private jet, French network TF1 reports. This arrest has ignited widespread speculation on social media, including on Telegram itself, though details are based on unnamed police sources.

French authorities issued a warrant for Durov, citing concerns that Telegram’s lack of content moderation and cooperation with law enforcement makes him complicit in alleged drug trafficking and money laundering via the app. The Russian embassy in France has requested an explanation but has not yet received a response.

Durov, worth an estimated $15.5 billion, left Russia in 2014 after defying government demands related to Ukrainian protest data. Now based in Dubai, his arrest is likely to intensify debates over the legal responsibilities of messaging platforms.

Threads tests posts that expire after 24 hours

Threads is testing a feature that allows posts to automatically expire after 24 hours, similar to Instagram Stories. This feature is currently available to a small group of users, offering a "new and casual way to share," according to Meta.

Developer Alessandro Paluzzi first revealed this option earlier this summer. Screenshots show that expiring posts and replies display a banner warning that the content will disappear after 24 hours. The post timer indicates how much time remains before deletion.

The concept is reminiscent of Twitter's Fleets, which allowed posts to vanish after a day but lacked interaction options. Threads’ version seems more interactive, potentially offering a low-pressure way to engage on social media. Temporary posts could be particularly useful for sharing live event updates that lose relevance quickly.
