Telegram has launched its first update of 2025, bringing significant new features to enhance user experience and security. A standout addition is the introduction of third-party verification for accounts, aiming to improve authenticity on the platform. Unlike the traditional blue checkmark, verified accounts through this method display a unique logo. Telegram stated, “This decentralized platform for additional verification will help prevent scams and reduce misinformation.”
The new verification system allows entities such as food-quality regulators or educational consortiums to authenticate accounts. Organizations can use Telegram’s Bot API to manage verification, giving them control over assigning or removing the status. Verified entities will also display their logos, similar to X's paid verification model. Individuals and organizations must undergo initial verification and complete an application to qualify for the mark.
Another key feature is the ability to upgrade gifts into NFTs. Users can buy Telegram Stars via the app or the Fragment platform using their TON crypto wallets. These stars can be used to send gifts with custom backgrounds and icons, which can be upgraded to NFTs for trading on various platforms. Telegram clarified that it charges users to convert gifts into collectibles to cover blockchain transaction costs.
In addition to these updates, Telegram introduced new search filters for private chats, group conversations, and channels, alongside emoji reactions for service messages like group joins. These updates reflect Telegram's ongoing commitment to innovation in both social media safety and user monetization through blockchain technology.
