STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

BUSINESS
Starbucks suddenly replaces CEO after sales drop

Starbucks announced Tuesday that CEO Laxman Narasimhan is being replaced by Chipotle CEO Brian Niccol, causing Starbucks stock to jump 24.5%, marking its best day ever. Chipotle's stock, however, dropped over 10% following the news of Niccol's departure after a successful tenure.

Narasimhan's exit is effective immediately, with Starbucks CFO Rachel Ruggeri stepping in as interim CEO until Niccol officially takes over on September 9. Narasimhan, who became CEO in March 2023, led the company through a challenging period marked by weak sales in the U.S. and China, leading to a 3% decline in same-store sales in the latest quarter.

Pressure on Starbucks grew as it struggled to boost store traffic. Former CEO Howard Schultz, who had chosen Narasimhan as his successor, had offered advice in an open letter but did not directly address Narasimhan.

SPACE
Enormous hidden ocean discovered under Mars

Geophysicists have discovered liquid water deep in Mars' crust, not just as ice or vapor. Using data from NASA's Mars Insight Lander, they analyzed four years of seismic recordings, revealing that Mars' mid-crust contains fractured igneous rocks saturated with liquid water.

Prof. Michael Manga from UC Berkeley explained that their methods are similar to those used for water and resource exploration on Earth. Their findings help explain Mars' water history, challenging theories that most water was lost to space. Studies suggest much of it is still trapped underground.

The researchers, in a PNAS study, estimate that liquid water could form a layer up to half a mile deep beneath Mars' surface. While this discovery is promising for future missions and colonization, accessing these reservoirs will be difficult due to their depth of 7 to 12.5 miles.

Google introduces Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL

Google unveiled the Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL at its latest event, showcasing significant upgrades over the standard Pixel 9. The Pro and Pro XL are nearly identical, with the XL offering a larger 6.8-inch screen and slightly faster charging. Your choice boils down to screen size preference.

Powered by the new Tensor G4 processor and 16GB of RAM, these phones are designed to excel at AI tasks, integrating Google's Gemini across chats, photos, and more. A one-year subscription to Google One AI Premium Plan is included, granting full access to Gemini's features.

Camera improvements are notable, with a 42 MP dual-pixel front camera and a triple rear setup featuring 50 MP, 48 MP ultrawide, and 48 MP telephoto sensors. Starting at $1,000 for the Pro and $1,100 for the Pro XL, both models are available in four colors, with pre-orders open now.

TECH SPECIAL
Spotify now shows in-app pricing to iPhone users in EU

Spotify will now display in-app pricing details for iPhone users in the European Union, following a lengthy legal battle with Apple. EU users can see promotional offers and subscription costs directly in the app, including post-promotion prices.

However, users still can’t make external purchases through the app. Spotify is opting into Apple’s “music streaming services entitlement,” introduced after Apple was fined €1.84 billion for antitrust violations in March. This choice allows Spotify to avoid Apple’s new developer terms, which would permit external payment links but at a cost that Spotify deems “illegal and predatory.”

Spotify’s dispute with Apple began in 2019 with an antitrust complaint over App Store rules, and the company claims Apple has been blocking changes like these until recently.
