STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

Casio confirms data breach in ransomware attack

Japanese electronics giant Casio confirmed that a recent ransomware attack led to the theft of sensitive data. Initially, Casio disclosed a cyberattack on October 7, but it wasn’t until later that the company revealed it was ransomware. The breach exposed personal data from employees, contractors, and business partners, as well as sensitive company information like invoices and HR files.

Hackers also accessed some customer data, though Casio hasn’t specified the types or extent. Importantly, credit card details were not compromised, and its Casio ID and ClassPad services remain unaffected. A ransomware group called Underground, linked to the Russia-affiliated Storm-0978, has claimed responsibility.

Underground says it stole over 200GB of data, including legal and payroll information. Casio is still investigating the full impact, with some systems remaining unusable. It’s unclear if a ransom has been demanded.

Scientists achieve two-way dream communication

Scientists in California have achieved a groundbreaking feat—two-way communication between people during lucid dreaming. A company called REMspace conducted the experiment on September 24, involving two experienced lucid dreamers. While asleep, they were hooked to equipment tracking their brain activity in real-time, and a central system monitored their dreams.

In the lucid state, the system sent a word in a created language, "Remmyo," to the first dreamer, who heard and repeated it aloud in the dream. Moments later, the second participant also received the same word, "Zhilak," in her dream, successfully repeating it.

This breakthrough could revolutionize sleep science, potentially aiding mental health treatment and skill development. REMspace envisions a future where dream communication is commonplace, transforming how we interact in sleep.

Google turns to nuclear to power AI data centres

Google is turning to nuclear energy to power its AI efforts, partnering with startup Kairos Power to build seven small nuclear reactors in the U.S. by 2035. The first of these small modular reactors (SMRs) is expected to be operational by 2030, aiming to deliver 500 megawatts of power by the decade’s end.

This is the first corporate deal to purchase nuclear power from SMRs, which are smaller and more cost-effective to build than traditional reactors. Kairos Power still needs regulatory approval, but it has already secured a permit for a demonstration reactor in Tennessee, set for 2027.

Google’s strategy involves buying power from multiple reactors to speed up deployment and reduce costs, part of its broader effort to scale advanced technologies. This follows similar nuclear deals by Microsoft and Amazon to meet growing AI-related energy demands.
