STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

CRYPTO
SEC paves the way for spot Ethereum ETFs

The US Securities and Exchange Commission has greenlit spot Ether exchange-traded funds (ETFs) from major players like VanEck, BlackRock, and Fidelity. This approval, amidst ongoing speculation about Ether's security classification, marks a significant regulatory milestone.

In a May 23 filing, the SEC sanctioned 19b-4 filings from various ETF issuers, enabling the listing and trading of spot Ether ETFs on their respective exchanges. However, the launch of these ETFs awaits the SEC's approval of their S-1 registration statements, a process that could span days to months.

Notably, the SEC's decision excludes Hashdex's spot Ether ETF application, with its fate pending ahead of other contenders. Whether Hashdex secures approval remains uncertain, underscoring the evolving landscape of cryptocurrency regulation.

GAMING
Atari acquires longtime rival Intellivision

Atari, renowned for classics like Pac-Man and Space Invaders, has acquired the Intellivision brand, marking a reunion of 70s and 80s gaming rivals. The deal includes control over 200 Intellivision games, presenting Atari with an opportunity to revitalize nostalgic titles.

The acquisition signals Atari's resurgence, leveraging its iconic IPs amidst a wave of retro gaming enthusiasm. While specific details remain undisclosed, Atari plans to distribute Intellivision titles digitally and physically, possibly exploring new game developments from the acquired licenses.

Intellivision, facing challenges and delays with its Amico console, continues separate development. This strategic move reflects Atari's ambition to unite former competitors and further solidify its position in the gaming industry.

OpenAI could be in big trouble with Scarlett Johansson

OpenAI could face legal issues for creating a ChatGPT voice resembling Scarlett Johansson, whether intentional or not. OpenAI's CEO acknowledging this similarity worsens the situation, intellectual property lawyers told The Verge. Purvi Patel Albers of Haynes Boone noted that case law supports Johansson's position.

The AI assistant's voice, named Sky, was compared to Johansson's role in the movie "Her," leading to discussions about the right to publicity laws. Albers explained these laws protect a person's identifying features from unauthorized use, and misappropriating someone's voice can violate this right.

Celebrities like Bette Midler and Tom Waits have won lawsuits over similar-sounding voices in ads, setting precedents that have implications for AI voice clones. To win such cases, celebrities must prove their voice is a distinctive unregistered trademark and that its imitation can mislead consumers.

Ai SPECIAL
Nvidia to design new AI chips every year

Nvidia just made a staggering $14 billion profit in one quarter thanks to its AI chips, and is now ramping up production. CEO Jensen Huang announced that Nvidia will now design new chips annually instead of every two years. "After Blackwell, there’s another chip. We’re on a one-year rhythm," Huang said during the Q1 2025 earnings call.

Previously, Nvidia released new architectures every two years, such as Ampere in 2020, Hopper in 2022, and Blackwell in 2024. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently reported that the next architecture, Rubin, will arrive in 2025, introducing the R100 AI GPU. Huang’s comments support this accelerated timeline.

Huang also revealed that Nvidia will speed up production of all its chips, including CPUs, GPUs, networking NICs, and switches. He assured that the new AI GPUs are backward-compatible, allowing customers to transition seamlessly within their data centers.
