STORIES MAKING A SPLASH
TECH
Reddit suffers second major outage in two days
Reddit experienced its second major outage in two days on November 21, leaving users unable to access the homepage and subreddits on both desktop and mobile. The disruption sparked widespread complaints across social media.
The company attributed Thursday’s outage to a faulty update, which was promptly rolled back. Wednesday’s longer downtime was caused by a bug from bad code. Reddit has denied any external interference, chalking it up to a streak of coding missteps—perhaps a signal to tighten up its development process.
By late morning, functionality was mostly restored, though error messages lingered on some pages. While Reddit issued an apology on X (formerly Twitter) for the first outage, it has remained silent about the second, leaving users questioning the platform's response to its technical troubles.

Australia introduces bill to ban under-16s from social media
Australia’s government has introduced a bill to ban children under 16 from using social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat. The bill places responsibility on platforms to enforce the ban or face fines of up to AUD$49.5 million ($32.2 million) and requires them to delete any underage user data.
Communications Minister Michelle Rowland highlighted the risks of harmful content, such as drug abuse and self-harm, on social media. Supported by both the Labor and Liberal parties, the bill is one of the world’s most aggressive efforts to protect children online without relying on parental consent.
The Australian Greens criticized the bill, claiming it’s rushed and could have unintended effects. Despite this, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called it "landmark reform," urging social media companies to take action.

OpenAI accidentally deleted evidence in copyright case
Lawyers for The New York Times and Daily News, which are suing OpenAI for allegedly scraping their works to train its AI models without permission, claim OpenAI engineers accidentally deleted crucial data. OpenAI had provided two virtual machines earlier this fall to allow the publishers to search its training sets for copyrighted content.
Since November 1, the publishers and their experts spent over 150 hours conducting searches. However, on November 14, OpenAI engineers erased all search data on one virtual machine. Despite attempts to recover it, most data was irretrievable, with key file names and folder structures lost.
The publishers’ attorneys say they must now redo a week's worth of work, adding time and cost. While they don’t believe the deletion was intentional, they argue OpenAI should be responsible for searching its own datasets for potential copyright violations.

Meta hires Salesforce AI CEO to lead new AI division
Meta has hired Clara Shih, former Salesforce CEO of AI, to lead its new Business AI group. Announcing the move on LinkedIn, Shih expressed excitement about making advanced AI tools accessible to businesses using Meta apps like Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, empowering them for success in the AI era.
Shih’s departure prompted a leadership shift at Salesforce, with Adam Evans now overseeing its AI efforts as Executive Vice President and General Manager of AI. Meta’s approach to AI stands out: instead of monetizing AI chatbots directly, it uses open-source Llama language models to enhance its existing platforms.
This new initiative likely aims to provide tools for businesses, such as AI-generated ads or content creation solutions. Meta has already integrated AI into its apps, including Instagram chatbots and Facebook’s AI-generated photo carousels.
