Ransomware Attack on Healthcare Giant Ascension Exposes Data of 5.6 Million Patients

Ascension emphasized that its electronic health records and other core clinical systems were not breached

More than seven months after a ransomware attack severely disrupted its IT systems, Ascension Health is now informing nearly 5.6 million individuals—current and former patients, employees, and residents—that their sensitive information may have been compromised.

The Missouri-based healthcare network, which operates 140 hospitals and 40 senior care facilities across 19 states and the District of Columbia, initially reported the breach in July, estimating 500 affected individuals. However, an updated filing this week reflects the significantly larger scope, with notifications also sent to state regulators, including those in California and Maine.
