STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

AI
Meta will add AI-generated images to Facebook and Instagram feeds

At Meta Connect, the company revealed it's testing a new feature that generates AI content based on your interests or trends, even incorporating your face. When you see an “Imagined for You” image, you can share it or create a new one instantly. Examples include AI images of magical realms or scenarios where you're a video game character or astronaut.

Meta clarified that AI images featuring your face will only be generated if you’ve opted into the “Imagine Yourself” feature and provided photos. You can remove these images from your feed if desired. For now, this feature is still in testing, with no confirmed release timeline.

Similar to Snapchat’s AI selfies, this content is designed to appear only to you unless you choose to share it, maintaining a level of user control over the experience.

ENTERTAINMENT
Disney Plus password-sharing crackdown launches

Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that starting this month, users will need to pay to share their password on Disney Plus. The cost for adding an “extra member” to an ad-supported plan is $6.99 monthly, rising to $9.99 for the ad-free option. This allows subscribers to share their account with someone outside their household, but only for standalone subscriptions billed directly by Disney.

There are some limitations to this extra member option: they’ll have just one profile and can stream or download on only one device at a time. Additionally, they cannot have any active or canceled Disney+ or Hulu subscriptions.

The rollout is currently happening in the U.S., Costa Rica, Guatemala, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region. This move follows Disney's earlier warnings about improper sharing, and the company plans to raise prices across all plans in October.

Kamala Harris vows to keep US ‘dominant in blockchain’

Kamala Harris has publicly expressed her support for protecting cryptocurrencies, emphasizing the U.S. need to remain dominant in blockchain, AI, and other emerging technologies. In her Sept. 25 speech at The Economic Club of Pittsburgh, she outlined a vision of investment in biomanufacturing, aerospace, and clean energy innovations.

Her remarks follow a Sept. 22 statement advocating for “digital assets” while highlighting the necessity of consumer protections. This stance is part of an 82-page economic plan that encourages the growth of innovative technologies, ensuring they align with investor safety.

Harris underscored the urgency of U.S. leadership in technology, stating it’s crucial for America to outpace rivals like China in the industries shaping the future, from advanced batteries to clean energy solutions built by American workers.

PayPal enables business accounts to buy, hold, and sell crypto

PayPal is expanding its digital asset offerings by allowing U.S. business customers to buy, sell, hold, and transfer cryptocurrencies. This initiative aims to enhance cryptocurrency utility for millions of merchants, although it will not initially be available for businesses in New York State.

The move follows PayPal's previous steps to capture a share of the digital assets market, including the launch of a U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoin last year. The platform first allowed users to hold digital assets in 2020 and has been responding to growing demand from business owners for similar cryptocurrency capabilities.

With this new service, U.S. merchants will be able to transfer cryptocurrency to eligible third-party wallets and receive supported tokens from external addresses, streamlining their engagement with digital currencies.
