STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

ENTERTAINMENT
‘Call Her Daddy’ podcast inks $125 million deal

Alex Cooper, host of the hit podcast "Call Her Daddy," is parting ways with Spotify for a lucrative deal with SiriusXM. The new multi-year agreement, reportedly worth $125 million, gives SiriusXM exclusive rights to her content, more than doubling her previous Spotify deal.

Starting next year, "Call Her Daddy" will be exclusive to SiriusXM, along with Cooper’s other Unwell Network podcasts like “Hot Mess” and “Pretty Lonesome.” This move follows other big-name podcasts, like “SmartLess,” which also left major platforms for SiriusXM.

SiriusXM's investment in podcasting contrasts with Spotify's recent cost-cutting measures after spending over $1 billion on podcasting ventures that didn't always succeed. Cooper's shift to SiriusXM marks another major win for the satellite radio giant in the competitive podcasting market.

Authors sue Anthropic over Claude chatbot training

A group of authors has filed a class action lawsuit against Anthropic, accusing the company of using pirated books to train its AI models. Filed in California, the lawsuit claims Anthropic built its business by illegally using copyrighted works, including those of well-known authors like Stephen King and Michael Pollan.

The authors allege that Anthropic used "The Pile," an open-source dataset containing a massive library of pirated ebooks known as Books3, to train its Claude AI chatbots. Anthropic confirmed using The Pile earlier this month, sparking legal action from authors like Andrea Bartz and Charles Graeber.

The lawsuit seeks damages and aims to stop Anthropic from using copyrighted material in the future. This case mirrors similar legal actions against other tech giants accused of using pirated content to develop AI models.

Cisco staff face silence before second 2024 layoff

Cisco is facing significant upheaval with its second round of layoffs this year, affecting 7% of its workforce. The company confirmed in an SEC filing last week that it will cut more than 6,300 jobs from its 90,400-strong team, resulting in short-term costs of about $1 billion. Employees are reportedly facing uncertainty, with notifications of layoffs delayed until September 16.

This follows a previous round of cuts in February, which impacted around 4,000 employees. Cisco, which also recently acquired Splunk Inc., is restructuring to focus more on cybersecurity, cloud systems, and AI, as explained by CFO Scott Herren. Despite the job losses, Herren emphasized that the cuts are aimed at realigning resources rather than boosting profits.

The layoffs have created a challenging work environment, with some employees describing it as the most toxic they have experienced.

TECH SPECIAL
Google Chrome is making it simpler to access passwords

Soon, you'll be able to access your saved passwords, bookmarks, and addresses in Chrome by simply signing into your Google account, without needing to toggle on Chrome sync. This feature, already available on iOS since last year, is coming soon to both Chrome on Android and desktop.

Google promises this update will offer a more personalized browsing experience, allowing you to sync tabs and use saved passwords across devices. However, signing in is optional; you can still browse without linking your data to your Google account. Note that saving your browsing history and open tabs will require a separate opt-in.

Claire Charron, Chrome’s product manager, emphasizes that this update aligns with current user expectations for seamless access to their data. Google will announce specific rollout dates for Android and desktop soon.
