STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

TECH
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 specs leaked

Nvidia is set to launch the GeForce RTX 5090 graphics card, featuring a hefty 32GB of GDDR7 memory. According to hardware leaker Kopite7kimi, this powerhouse will consume around 600 watts, significantly more than the 450 watts of the RTX 4090. The RTX 5090 is expected to come with a 512-bit memory bus and an astonishing 21,760 CUDA cores, promising remarkable performance.

The RTX 5080 is also on the way, with a reported power draw of 400 watts, up from the RTX 4080's 320 watts. This card will likely include 16GB of GDDR7 memory and a 256-bit memory bus, featuring 10,752 CUDA cores.

Kopite7kimi has a solid track record in predicting Nvidia's hardware specs, previously revealing details about the RTX 3090, RTX 3080, and other models, solidifying their reputation in the tech community.

Zillow adds climate risk data to its real estate listings

As climate risks become increasingly significant, Zillow is integrating climate data into its property listings to aid homebuyers in long-term decision-making. Through a partnership with First Street, listings will now feature information on flood, wildfire, wind, heat, and air quality risks, along with any climate-related insurance requirements.

This data is being added to Zillow’s website and iOS app this year, with Android updates expected early next year. The information will also be available on Zillow’s interactive map, using color-coded visualizations to display risk levels across regions.

For homebuyers, this provides valuable insights, while for others, it highlights the growing impact of climate change on real estate. Zillow also recently enhanced its AI search functionality, making the platform even more user-friendly.

OpenAI ditches non-profit controls as top execs leave

OpenAI is reportedly undergoing a major shift, moving towards becoming a for-profit benefit corporation. This change comes as the company negotiates a massive funding round that could value it at over $150 billion. As part of the new structure, CEO Sam Altman may receive a 7% equity stake, according to Bloomberg.

The company’s nonprofit arm would retain minority ownership, but OpenAI will no longer be controlled by its nonprofit board, making it more appealing to investors. This shift mirrors the structure of AI rival Anthropic but raises concerns about balancing profit motives with AI safety.

These changes follow Altman's return as CEO last November, when he mentioned plans to improve governance. Several key executives, including CTO Mira Murati and former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, have already left amid this restructuring.

Advanced AI chatbots rarely admit they don’t know everything

Smarter chatbots are increasingly prone to confidently giving wrong answers instead of admitting, "I don’t know." As AI models improve, their errors become harder for users to detect, leading to more misinformation. "They are answering almost everything these days," José Hernández-Orallo, professor at Universitat Politecnica de Valencia, told Nature.

Hernández-Orallo’s team studied AI models like GPT, LLaMA, and BLOOM, finding that as these systems advanced, they answered more questions outside their expertise, making more mistakes. Human testers often misjudged these responses, wrongly classifying inaccurate answers as correct 10-40% of the time.

The researchers suggest AI developers focus on improving simple tasks and programming chatbots to refuse complex questions, helping users better understand their limitations.
