OpenAI Says Elon Musk Wanted to Run It as a For-Profit

The company has asked a federal judge in California to dismiss Musk's lawsuit

The legal battle between Elon Musk and OpenAI is intensifying, with a new blog post from OpenAI offering a detailed defense against Musk's claims. The post sheds light on some newly revealed text messages between key figures at OpenAI—cofounders Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman, Sam Altman, and Musk, along with former board member Shivon Zilis.

In the post, OpenAI addresses the lawsuit head-on, stating, “You can’t sue your way to AGI,” referring to artificial general intelligence, a goal Sam Altman has long promised is on the horizon. OpenAI expresses respect for Musk’s achievements and gratitude for his early role in the company but urges him to shift his focus from the courtroom to the marketplace. “It is critical for the U.S. to remain the global leader in AI,” the post continues, emphasizing that OpenAI’s mission to ensure AGI benefits all of humanity is unwavering. “We hope Elon shares that goal and will uphold the values of innovation and free-market competition that have driven his own success.”
