STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

OpenAI emails show Elon Musk wanted for-profit structure

The legal battle between Elon Musk and OpenAI is heating up, with OpenAI releasing a blog post defending itself against Musk's claims. The post includes newly revealed text messages between key figures at OpenAI, including cofounders Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman, Sam Altman, and Musk. It addresses Musk's lawsuit, emphasizing that "You can’t sue your way to AGI," and urges Musk to focus on the marketplace rather than the courtroom.

The post also highlights Musk’s early involvement in shaping OpenAI’s direction, including discussions in 2017 about moving to a for-profit model. Musk pushed for a more commercially driven approach and even proposed merging OpenAI with Tesla, but his ideas were rejected by leadership.

Musk’s eventual departure from OpenAI came after failed attempts to take control, including efforts to become CEO. He then shifted his focus to AI research at Tesla, which he saw as key to funding ambitious AI projects.

Hackers hit Rhode Island benefits system in major cyberattack

Hackers targeted Rhode Island's public benefits system, compromising sensitive data, including Social Security numbers and banking information, of hundreds of thousands of people. Governor Dan McKee confirmed the attackers have threatened to release this data unless a ransom is paid. A hotline (833-918-6603) has been set up, but affected individuals will be notified by mail, not through the hotline.

The breach impacted the RIBridges system, which is used for Medicaid, SNAP, TANF, and other state programs. Anyone who has applied for or received benefits from these services could be affected.

Deloitte, which maintains the system, detected the breach on December 5 and confirmed the presence of malicious code by December 13. The system is currently offline while security measures are implemented, and people must apply for benefits by mail in the meantime.

US court rejects TikTok request to temporarily halt US ban

A federal court has rejected TikTok's request to temporarily block a law that could lead to the app's ban next month. The ruling follows an emergency injunction filed by TikTok earlier this week and marks another legal setback as the company battles to avoid a full ban in the U.S.

TikTok had sought a delay, indicating plans to appeal to the Supreme Court and referencing President-elect Donald Trump's past comments about the app. However, a panel of three judges deemed the request “unwarranted,” denying the pause.

Now, TikTok's future hinges on the Supreme Court, though there's no guarantee it will take up the case. The company warned that unless the ban is stopped, the voices of over 170 million Americans could be silenced starting January 19, 2025.
