Coinbase files lawsuits against SEC and FDIC

Coinbase has filed lawsuits against the SEC and FDIC, alleging failure to comply with Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and seeking court intervention for transparency. These lawsuits, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, accuse the agencies of obstructing access to banking services for the crypto industry.

Accessing records from federal agencies through FOIA requests is crucial. The lawsuit against the FDIC claims that federal financial regulators have actively hindered the digital-asset industry for nearly two years.

Coinbase, represented by consultant firm History Associates Inc., specifically requested records from the SEC regarding its stance on ether and Ethereum's transition to proof-of-stake. The SEC initially investigated "Ethereum 2.0" but later closed the inquiry, sparking concerns about transparency in regulatory actions.

Rivian teases five vehicles in investor presentation

Rivian, amidst its battle for survival, remains ambitiously forward-thinking with plans for at least five new vehicles. These include additional models on their Gen 2 platform and a mid-size platform, potentially featuring a redesigned delivery van and a more affordable mid-size pickup.

The R2 SUV, set to be manufactured in Illinois with an estimated price of $45,000, is slated for initial deliveries by the first half of 2026. Rivian has hinted at a cheaper R3 model to follow, while also gearing up for three vehicles under an "affordable mass market" architecture, developed in collaboration with Volkswagen.

Volkswagen's substantial investment of up to $5 billion will support Rivian's operations, including scaling production in Illinois and Georgia, and jointly developing next-generation electric vehicle technology.

CIR sues OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement

OpenAI and Microsoft have been sued by the Center for Investigative Reporting for allegedly using its articles without permission. The nonprofit, known for publications like Mother Jones and Reveal, accuses OpenAI of copying and displaying its content to enhance AI training, thereby potentially diminishing the market for its articles.

This lawsuit is part of a broader trend where news organizations, including The New York Times and Chicago Tribune, have raised similar concerns about AI firms appropriating copyrighted material. Such legal disputes could redefine how news content is used in AI systems, impacting media revenue models.

Amid these challenges, some media outlets have opted to collaborate with tech giants like OpenAI, such as News Corp., which recently struck a deal allowing content integration into AI tools like ChatGPT, highlighting evolving dynamics in content usage and compensation.

AI to replicate Al Michaels' voice for 2024 Olympics

NBC announced plans to feature an artificial clone of sports broadcaster Al Michaels' voice for its daily Summer Olympics recaps on Peacock, set to air during the Paris Games. The AI-generated narration will replicate Michaels' renowned expertise and delivery style, using training data from his previous NBC appearances.

Michaels, 79, initially expressed skepticism about the idea but was impressed after hearing the AI-generated version of his voice. In an interview with Vanity Fair, he described the experience as astonishing and slightly unnerving due to the accuracy of the cloned voice, which can even greet viewers by name.

Having joined NBC Sports in 2006, Michaels is recognized for his long tenure as the voice of "Sunday Night Football," continuing until 2021 when he transitioned to an emeritus role at the network.
