STORIES MAKING A SPLASH
GAMING
YouTube rolls out its new Playables games to all users
YouTube's "Playables," a collection of lightweight, free games, is expanding to all users. Previously tested with select users and YouTube Premium subscribers, these games will now be accessible in the YouTube app and on the Home page. Popular titles like Angry Birds Showdown, Words of Wonders, and Cut the Rope are included.
YouTube’s Playables don’t monetize through paid downloads or in-app purchases, sidestepping Apple’s rules. Instead, they could compete with App Store’s free games that generate revenue via ads. While YouTube hasn't yet signaled an intent to monetize these games, they could eventually become a new ad space.
For now, Playables serve as a fun distraction, keeping users engaged between browsing and viewing sessions. With over 75 minigames, users can save progress and track scores, with the feature fully rolling out in the coming weeks.
AI
OpenAI announces Safety and Security Committee
OpenAI has introduced a new Safety and Security Committee to oversee risk management amid training its next frontier model. This move follows recent media scrutiny and aims to address concerns regarding the timeline for achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI).
The nature of the upcoming model, whether it's GPT-5 or beyond, remains undisclosed. In AI, a "frontier model" denotes a system designed to expand current capabilities, while AGI refers to AI with human-level abilities.
Led by OpenAI directors, the committee will advise the board on AI safety, focusing on preventing rogue AI and implementing broader safeguards outlined in a recent safety update. Its initial task involves evaluating and refining these measures over the next 90 days, with plans to publicly share updates on adopted recommendations.

TikTok ban law will be argued in court this September
A US appeals court has expedited the consideration of legal challenges to a law requiring ByteDance, the China-based owner of TikTok, to sell its US assets by January 19 or face a ban. The court set oral arguments for September after TikTok, ByteDance, and TikTok content creators, backed by the Justice Department, requested a quick schedule.
In response to a lawsuit filed by TikTok creators aiming to block the law, the appeals court mandated legal briefs to be filed by June 20, with a final ruling sought by December 6. The law, signed by President Biden on April 24, aims to address national security concerns without banning TikTok outright.
The legislation, driven by fears of Chinese access to American data, prohibits app stores from offering TikTok and internet hosting services from supporting it unless ByteDance divests its ownership.

RansomHub claims responsibility for Christie's hack
The ransomware group RansomHub is claiming responsibility for a recent cyberattack on Christie’s, a prominent British auction house. They have threatened to expose sensitive personal data, including names and dates of birth, from over 500,000 clients worldwide.
RansomHub, a relatively new cybercrime group, garnered attention by recruiting a former ALPHV/BlackCat affiliate and threatening to sell data stolen from Change Healthcare. The attack on Christie’s forced the auction house to temporarily shut down its main website on May 9, although most auctions continued as planned.
Christie’s CEO, Guillaume Cerutti, assured stakeholders that the situation was being managed according to established protocols with expert support. Despite a brief postponement of one auction, the impact of the attack was largely mitigated.
