OpenAI dissolves team focused on long-term AI risks
The same week OpenAI launched GPT-4o, its most human-like AI, the company dissolved its Superalignment team, Wired reported Friday. This team, created in July 2023 and led by Ilya Sutskever and Jan Leike, focused on mitigating AI risks like it "going rogue."
The team disbanded shortly after Sutskever and Leike announced their resignations. Sutskever expressed confidence in OpenAI's future safety under current leadership and hinted at a personally meaningful new project. Leike cited long-standing disagreements over company priorities and noted challenges in securing resources for their research.
The Superalignment team's mission was to address superintelligence alignment challenges within four years, a goal OpenAI admitted was ambitious. Despite their dissolution, some team members have been reassigned within the company.

Slack under attack over sneaky AI training policy
Slack uses user messages, files, and other content to train machine-learning models without explicit permission, opting users in by default. To stop this, you must ask your organization's Slack admin to contact Slack, as you can't opt out yourself.
Corey Quinn, an executive at DuckBill Group, highlighted this policy found in Slack’s Privacy Principles on X (via PCMag), stating that Slack analyzes customer data for AI/ML model development. Slack clarified that while customer data isn't used for generative AI products, it does train models for features like channel and emoji recommendations, using de-identified, aggregate data.
To opt-out, your organization's admin must email Slack with your workspace URL and a specific subject line. Slack confirmed that users can exclude their data from these models, which don't access content from DMs, private, or public channels.

Apple is reportedly developing a slimmer iPhone
Since the iPhone X’s introduction of OLED and Face ID in 2017, Apple’s phones haven’t changed much, but a major redesign is reportedly underway for a new “Slim” iPhone. Expected in 2025 with the iPhone 17, it could be pricier than the current iPhone Pro Max.
Rumors from analyst Jeff Pu suggest the iPhone 17 might feature a refreshed design with a smaller Dynamic Island. The “Slim” iPhone 17 would have a 6.6-inch display, fitting between the 6.1-inch and 6.9-inch screens of other models. Another report pegs the display size at 6.55 inches.
Multiple designs are being considered for the high-end model, including an aluminum frame, smaller front camera cutouts, and center-mounted rear cameras. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also suggests an energy density upgrade with a stainless steel battery case, potentially for all models in 2025.
