STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

TECH
Amazon given FAA clearance to expand drone deliveries

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has granted Amazon permission to fly its delivery drones beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS). This approval allows Amazon to expand its drone service, offering faster deliveries and a larger selection of items.

Previously, Amazon could only fly drones within the line of sight of spotters or pilots, limiting their range. To overcome this, Amazon developed "onboard detect-and-avoid technology" and conducted extensive flight tests, demonstrating safety around various aircraft to FAA inspectors.

With BVLOS approval, Amazon plans to extend its drone delivery area around College Station, Texas, and integrate drone deliveries into its broader network by late 2024. Despite halting operations at a test site in Lockeford, California, Amazon will launch drone deliveries in the West Valley, Phoenix metro area.

Filing shows Salesforce paid $419M to buy Spiff

Salesforce recently acquired Spiff, a platform that helps manage commissions, for $419 million. This acquisition, revealed in a 10-Q filing, includes $374 million in cash. Salesforce made this move to enhance its ability to support companies with incentive-based compensation schemes.

The acquisition followed Salesforce’s disappointing quarterly results, with revenues of $9.13 billion falling short of analysts' $9.15 billion expectations. This marks the first revenue miss for Salesforce in 18 years, contributing to a 16% drop in its stock price. In this context, acquiring Spiff aims to drive future revenue growth.

Spiff, based in Salt Lake City, was valued at $260 million in May 2023 before raising $50 million. Its significant value increase underscores strong demand for solid companies, even amid broader startup pressures.

Apple and OpenAI sign deal to partner on AI

Since mid-2023, Microsoft has been concerned about a deal between Apple and OpenAI, as Microsoft also relies on OpenAI's technology. The Information reports that Apple is set to unveil AI-based features powered by OpenAI at WWDC 2024.

Apple's machine learning team met with OpenAI, including CEO Sam Altman, last year. They agreed to let Apple employees use OpenAI APIs for internal testing, integrating ChatGPT with Siri to handle more complex queries. Evidence of this integration was found in iOS 17.4 code by 9to5Mac.

The partnership aims to make Siri more responsive and capable, including real-time translation. However, Apple plans to indicate when Siri responses are generated by ChatGPT. Meanwhile, Microsoft, which uses OpenAI for its Copilot and data centers, is worried about server demand when Apple rolls out these new features.

AI SPECIAL
Sony Pictures will cut film costs 'using AI, primarily'

Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) CEO Tony Vinciquerra is bullish on AI, particularly for its cost-cutting potential in film production. Speaking at an investor event, Vinciquerra emphasized the need for efficiency and hinted at AI's central role in future filmmaking for both theaters and television.

His support for AI comes amidst industry tensions. Vinciquerra acknowledged the controversy surrounding AI among creatives, citing past strikes and ongoing negotiations. The outcome of these discussions will shape the extent to which studios like Sony can implement AI.

While Vinciquerra addressed various analyst questions, the possibility of Sony acquiring Paramount remained unexplored. However, his remarks on mergers and acquisitions hinted at potential strategic moves in the future.
