STORIES MAKING A SPLASH

TECH
WhatsApp reaches 100 million monthly users in the US

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Thursday that WhatsApp has surpassed 100 million monthly active users in the U.S., despite the country's strong SMS/text preference. This is the first time WhatsApp has shared U.S. user data, revealing that over 50% of its American users have iPhones, reflecting iOS's dominant market share.

Globally, WhatsApp boasts over 2 billion active users, with its largest bases in India, Brazil, and Indonesia. The app has intensified its U.S. marketing efforts with campaigns, Times Square ads, and TV spots focusing on privacy and encryption. Recently, it even featured cast members from "Modern Family" in a national campaign.

Meta has highlighted WhatsApp's privacy features compared to Apple's iMessage, though Apple now supports Rich Communication Services (RCS) for enhanced media sharing and messaging features, while messages remain green for Android users.

Applied Intuition closes $300 million secondary round

Applied Intuition, a Silicon Valley vehicle software supplier, has closed a $300 million secondary round with new investor Fidelity Management & Research Company joining existing backers General Catalyst, BOND, Lux Capital, and Elad Gil. This round allowed investors to purchase equity from current and former employees and early investors.

This funding follows a $250 million Series E in March, aimed at expanding Applied Intuition's team and AI-powered product portfolio. "We're advancing rapidly thanks to AI, autonomous driving, and electrification," said co-founder and CTO Peter Ludwig.

2024 is set to be momentous for Applied Intuition, with launches including an off-road autonomy stack, a generative AI simulation tool, hardware-in-the-loop testing software, and an automated parking solution, showcasing their innovation in the industry.

OpenAI to launch ‘SearchGPT’ in challenge to Google

OpenAI is launching SearchGPT, an AI-driven search engine designed to enhance online information retrieval. Unlike traditional search engines, SearchGPT provides not just a list of links but organizes and summarizes the data. For example, it consolidates information on music festivals into concise summaries and links, and offers detailed advice on planting tomatoes with follow-up options.

Currently a prototype, SearchGPT uses the GPT-4 model and is available to just 10,000 test users. It leverages direct content feeds and third-party collaborations to refine its search results, with plans to eventually integrate these features into ChatGPT.

This move positions OpenAI as a competitor to Google, which is rapidly incorporating AI into its search engine, and puts it in direct rivalry with the AI “answer” engine Perplexity, which has faced criticism for its summarization methods.

Video game actors go on strike for AI protections

SAG-AFTRA has announced a strike against major video game publishers, set to start at 12:01 am on July 26, after failing to reach an agreement on AI use. Union President Fran Drescher stated, "We won’t consent to a contract that allows companies to exploit A.I. at our members' expense. We’re ready to negotiate when they offer a fair deal."

SAG-AFTRA seeks the same protections for game performers as those in film, TV, and music, including fair compensation and the right to control AI use of their likenesses. National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland emphasized that these fundamental protections are essential.

The union began negotiations in October 2022. While studios like Replica Games have agreed to the terms, many others remain in dispute. SAG-AFTRA recently secured similar agreements for animated TV shows.
