STORIES MAKING A SPLASH
AUTOMOTIVE
Tesla recalls majority of Cybertrucks for fourth time
Tesla’s Cybertruck is facing another recall, potentially affecting nearly 12,000 owners, according to The Verge. The recall involves 11,688 Cybertrucks due to a faulty windshield wiper and 11,383 electric pickups for loose trim in the bed, which could create road hazards. Tesla states it is unaware of any injuries or deaths related to these issues.
The NHTSA's notice explains that Tesla will replace the wiper motor and secure the trim at no cost. This recall follows a significant one earlier this year involving a faulty accelerator pedal that impacted nearly 4,000 vehicles.
It is unclear what percentage of total sales these recalls represent. As of April, Tesla had sold 3,878 Cybertrucks, and with nearly 12,000 vehicles now recalled, the issues might affect a large portion of their sales to date.

OpenAI to block access to its AI services in China
OpenAI plans to block ChatGPT in China from July 9, where its services aren’t officially available. The move affects users accessing ChatGPT through OpenAI’s API in China, despite the service’s unavailability there. OpenAI notified Chinese users via email about the upcoming access restrictions, citing the need to block API traffic from unsupported regions, according to reports from Securities Times and Reuters.
While OpenAI operates in over 160 countries, China is excluded. Attempting to access OpenAI’s products from unsupported countries can lead to blocks or suspensions, although enforcement details were unclear until now.
The decision coincides with OpenAI's recent actions against covert influence operations, possibly linked to China, and broader pressures on US tech companies to limit China's access to advanced technologies.

Samsung's next Unpacked event is on July 10
Samsung’s next Unpacked event is on July 10 in Paris, following its Galaxy S24 unveiling and Galaxy Ring render reveal in January. The event promises “the next generation of Galaxy AI and the ever-expanding Galaxy ecosystem,” with Paris chosen for its trendsetting reputation, hinting at potential fashion-related innovations.
Paris will also host the 2024 Summer Olympics, where Samsung is a sponsor, suggesting possible Olympic-branded editions of Galaxy S flagships. The Galaxy Ring, expected to launch in the US around August, will likely feature prominently, alongside foldable phones such as the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6, and new earbuds.
Samsung offers US customers a $50 credit for pre-ordering any new device through July 10, with reservations also entered into a sweepstakes to win $5,000 in Samsung Credit.

Google launches AI summaries for Gmail
Google is rolling out Gemini AI features across Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive. In Gmail, the Gemini side panel helps draft emails, summarize threads, and answer specific queries from emails or Drive files. These enhancements were unveiled at Google's I/O conference, emphasizing new AI capabilities.
Gemini in Gmail offers prompts for drafting emails and responding to messages, alongside the ability to retrieve specific information or document details. These features are available exclusively to paid Google Workspace or Google One AI Premium subscribers.
In Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive, Gemini assists in content creation, data summarization, and task automation, such as generating slides, tables, and formulas. Users can streamline workflows and access detailed insights, but like in Gmail, access requires a subscription to specific Gemini plans.
