Google's new quantum chip suggests multiple universes exist

Google’s new quantum chip, Willow, has sparked excitement with a bold claim: it completed a calculation in under five minutes that would take supercomputers 10 septillion years. Founder Hartmut Neven suggested this performance hints at parallel universes, supporting the multiverse theory proposed by physicist David Deutsch.

While some dismissed this as speculative, others in the quantum field found it plausible. Critics, however, note that Google used its own benchmark, raising questions about the validity of its claims. This doesn’t disprove the multiverse but highlights the need for independent verification.

Quantum computers like Willow rely on qubits, which can exist in multiple states simultaneously. Though capable of solving complex problems, they remain prone to errors. Google aims to overcome this with Willow, bringing the promise of quantum computing closer to reality.

MicroStrategy buys another $2.1 billion worth of Bitcoin

MicroStrategy continued its bitcoin buying spree last week, spending $2.1 billion to acquire 21,550 BTC. The company's total holdings now exceed 423,650 bitcoins, valued at $41.5 billion, giving it control of over 2% of the 21 million bitcoins that will ever exist.

This latest purchase was funded through a $2.13 billion share sale, part of a broader $42 billion plan to acquire bitcoin through shares and convertible notes. The company bought the bitcoins at an average price of $98,783 each, as prices surged past $100,000.

Other companies are following suit, with a major bitcoin miner announcing a $500 million bond offering to buy more bitcoin. Several other firms have also revealed plans to increase their bitcoin holdings in the wake of MicroStrategy’s strategy.

TikTok’s e-commerce Shop launches in Spain

TikTok is launching its e-commerce Shop feature in Spain, signaling a major step in its European expansion. This move comes as parent company ByteDance accelerates growth amid looming concerns over a potential U.S. ban. Spanish users can now make in-app purchases via shoppable videos, live streams, and digital storefronts, while businesses and creators gain new tools to sell directly through the platform.

Initially tested in the U.K. in 2021, TikTok Shop has since expanded to markets across Asia and the U.S., where it achieved over $100 million in single-day sales during Black Friday—three times last year’s figure. The platform also saw a 165% surge in shoppers during Cyber Monday weekend.

With these successes, TikTok Shop positions itself as a strong competitor to e-commerce giants like Amazon, alongside rivals Temu and Shein, while setting its sights on dominating Europe.

Instagram rolls out ‘trial reels’ for creators

Instagram is rolling out "trial Reels," a new feature allowing creators to post content without it appearing on their followers' feeds. Instead, these videos are recommended to non-followers, offering a way to test content without the pressure of engagement from existing fans.

This feature comes after feedback from creators who feel nervous about posting content that might not perform well. Meta designed trial Reels to help creators experiment with different styles and get a quick sense of how their videos could fare, without worrying about their followers’ reactions.

Creators can toggle the "trial" option before publishing. After 24 hours, they’ll receive performance data like views, likes, shares, and comments. Though it may take longer to gain traction, trial Reels offer a low-risk way to explore new ideas and gauge potential success.
